I'm on Vista.
For some reason I can no longer put the computer into sleep mode without, when I press the power button later on, it refusing to work (I can hear the fans and shit, but the monitor keeps saying 'No Input Device', and the lights on the keyboard don't flash as they do as usual).
I can then only turn the computer on by unplugging the whole thing, plugging it back in, and turning it on, it then boots as if it had been shut down.
I have to shut down the computer every time. Not only that, but it won't just load properly after I've previously shut it down - it has to take me to the "press F1" screen every time first.
This is really time consuming and just generally niggling. Can anyone please help?

Doesn't your computer heat up too much? Maybe it's shutting down on its own to prevent excessive heat?
Just a theory, I'm really not good with the mechanical part of computers.

I doubt it.
I mean, I appreciate the help, but I don't think that's the case. I just had my sister's fiancee, who builds computers, install me a new DVD drive. I think he would have noticed it.

Hm... is there no dust in the fan or anything either? I guess the fiancé would have noticed that too but you never know. I remember my home computer had some big issues which involved the computer booting as if it had shut down (and often shutting down by itself too). It was not the exact same thing but I guess that's close. And when I took a look inside the computer, I discovered it was literally COVERED with dust. Unfortunately, it was too late to repair it so I lost all my datas.

It's in sleep mode, I think to reactivate it, you merely press the ESC key.
When you restart it by unplugging it, it will have a hard time starting back up, since all of your programs were on running in the background, and you stopped them.
I do not think removing the power in a sensible solution, as you risk really damaging your machine.

I know how awful unplugging the machine is for it, but there is literally no way to get it to work again when I've put it in sleep mode. I don't understand the first part of that post. On my computer, you put it in sleep mode, then it goes off. To get it out of sleep mode, you press the 'power' button again, and it will go to the login screen immediately.

Thanks for that link. I'm busy now, but I'll try that tomorrow. I really appreciate the help. Just making sure I'm understood, though - the monitor says 'no input device' when I press the power button coming out of sleep mode. Previously, in the exact same circumstances, it went onto the login screen.

From reading that page, a System Restore sounds like the simplest answer. If that doesn't work, then maybe some settings in your Sleep Panel need to be tweaked. Good luck.

I don't think the monitor is doing anything of its own accord - I just turn it off when I'm done, and when I turn it on and then bring the CPU back from sleep mode - 'No Input Signal', same as when the computer isn't even on. Someone reassure me - System Restore doesn't f*** with any of your data, does it?
