OK. So, I'm thinking about this while watching "The Dark Knight". Now, in pretty much every Batman movie of the dark brooding Batman era, Batman has the big mask with eyeholes and space for the mouth. Now, in all of these, the mask isn't covering all the actual eye. It pretty much goes from below the eyebrow to right on the bags of the eyes. Yet, the eye is black where the mask isn't showing. So, does Batman wear eye make up? I mean, it's not something that's shown on the theater. Keaton ripped off his mask in part 2, and there was no paint under his eyes. Just something that came to mind.
BTW, I'm gonna say right now, whatever villain is gonna be in the 3rd Nolan movie, if there is one, is gonna wear a suit. Everyone seems to wear a suit. Ghul wears one, Scarecrow does too, Joker has a funky one, and Harvey has a burnt one.

The actual Batman costume that was worn by Keaton, Kilmer, Clooney and Bale would require eye-makeup from a makeup person. But I don't think you are meant to think that Batman actually does it, if that makes sense.

Just something that came to mind. In one of the "Behind The Scenes" for Returns you see Keaton walking around without the mask on, but hes still got the make up around his eyes. And Keaton didnt have paint around his eyes in Returns because they took it off and then just edited it. You can see the black paint/make up suddenly disappear right before he pulls off the mask. Oh and as for the in movie explanation, I dont think it would be too hard to believe Batman puts on the make up. Hes willing to dress up like a bat and it just looks stupid to actually see his skin through the eye holes. And I bet The Riddler will have a green suit if hes in Batman 3. I hope so. The green tights and stuff just look stupid...

Yes, Batman in the movie incarnations wears black eye makeup. In Returns some have claimed that when he first took it off he had the eye makeup for a second and then a cut back to Batman with no eye makeup.
Yes, most of the prominent male bat villians have suits. Even Mr. Freeze, a refrigeration suit.

I always assumed that the eye make up was meant to give Batman more "mystery" in his mask. In the comics, Batman's eyes are opaque, so the black make up in live-action is the best substitute.

The actor portraying Batman undoubtedly is wearing eye-makeup. That is without question surely. But I think in the movie it is meant to be just another advanced part of the mask.

I heard it was to make the eyes stand out more. Plus, it does look stupid to see the skin around the eyes. Chris O'Donnell did it as Robin, Silverstone did it as Batgirl, and Jim Carrey did it for The Riddler. Just makes it look more menacing, black with the white eyes showing.

I got a question about the Dark Knight.
Watching iot again over the weekend, and at the end when Two-Face has Gordon's family, he flips the coin for the son and before he can catch it, Batman tackles him off the building.
Now I know they show the way the coin falls, but to be honest I couldn't tell. It was so dark, that it looked like it could've been either side. So for those with keener eyesight, what way did the coin fall?

The coin landed on "Heads" or the side with the details still intact.

Y'know, as I think about it..... In all the major interpretations of Batman in the comics, you never see his eyes. You just see white in the slots where his eyes are. I wonder what that would look like in a real life movie... NPH as The Riddler is just made of WIN. If NPH is the Riddler, then I will just sign a blank check, give it to the box office at my theatre, and tell them to write whatever number they can on it. And by Christ, I will find a way to pay it.

Sign me up for wanting NPH as The Riddler as well. Hey, some of us thought Ledger as Joker was a bad idea, NPH could knock this out of the park as well. Hell, Anthony Michael Hall was in Dark Knight. What is that Wanda chick from Doogie Howser doing these days? There's your Catwoman.

In the Batman Begins script, they actually addressed the eye makeup. When he comes up from the cave for his birthday party and Alfred is chewing him out, he reminds Bruce to wipe the warpaint from around his eyes before he goes out there with his guests. They dropped it from the actual film, I'm assuming to just continue the illusion that Batman doesn't actually wear eye paint.
Bottom line - the eye paint just makes the masks look better.
