I thought about getting one, I had one when I was kid. Not to sound morbid, but does anyone know a hamster's average lifespan?

He looks like the hamster my sister had when we were kids. He was called Ozzy. He's a cutie.
Papa Sweed; Syrian Hamsters live for 2-3 years on average. My Sister had one live for 7 years and a couple of mine have lived for 4-6 years so it's not unusual for them to have good longevity.

Reminds me of the hamster I had some years ago, Hannibal. I named him as such because if anyone tried to hold him but me, he pretty much tried to eat them. Not sure how old he was when I got him but he lived a good 3 years or so.

hen I first saw him I immediately thought of the name Chunk. Because 1. He was the biggest of his siblings. 2. Goonies is my favorite movie.
But I need to learn his personality more before I can name him.
He's loving the toilet paper tube and he went to town on some homey nut cheerios. LOL

He should be happy. He was a week away from being Lizard food. I like Chunk myself.

I want to get some pet rats sometime, but given that my dogs seem to be attempting to become amateur mousers, spending half the day trying to catch mice outside, it's probably not a good idea.
Especially when one of them tried to kill my hedgehog I used to have, flinging it across the room, while it spiked him in the face.

Awesome, man. I got my fiancee a hamster two years ago and since then we've had a batch of them. She really loves the little guys/gals.
That said, we had: Eponine, Cossette, Fantine, Javert... and currently still alive, Amelie.
I have to say, sometimes she seems like the Hamster Dr. Kevorkian, but it was the whole wet tail thing.
Keep that hammy healthy!

I had one hamster, I named him Yokozuna as well... something was wrong with him genetically. His backside was HYOOGE to the point he'd get stuck in the standard pipes. Sadly, that's how he died as I had him set up in an aquarium with the hamster set over the top. I capped off the aquarium part and either my brother or sister opened it up, and he got stuck and died. I only had him one day, but the pet store gave it to me for free. I'm a gerbil fan myself. I've had several over the years... Stinker, Weird Al, Jane (Weird Al killed her), and the last was Fitty. Stinker and Weird Al were really nice to me. In fact, Stinker was nice to everyone. I didn't have Jane long (less than a week) and Fitty was fairly mean... even I couldn't hold him and he tried to escape at the pet store (he did, the clerk and I cornered him). I had him a little over a year before he had a heart attack I think (he loved to eat potato chips, which probably weren't the best for him.) My sister's had a hamster or two. Both of us have the discontinued Habitrail theme sets (she has the space station, I have the safari). (I had no idea what happened to the old ones I had) They are half a pain to assemble (you really need two sets of hands), but they're great sturdy sets with lots of additions made and are fairly cheap now compared to their original prices. My gerbil loved his toilet paper tubes as well. Well... he loved destroying them. He also loved destroying the cardboard house I bought him as well. My sister's hamster loved these "treats" she got him, that were food coloring and made out of flour. They were basically like these... www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2752423&utm_source=cse&utm_campaign=2752423&utm_medium=googleproduct&mr:trackingCode=D036CDF4-A6CE-DD11-80C2-001422107090&mr:referralID=NAI'd really like to get another hamster or gerbil, but probably won't be until I get my own place, as I realized from Fitty that they bother me too much in my sleep.
