Rodents are solid pets. Good plan just buying one.
Have had 5 gerbils (1 - 2 - 2), and the one alone became much friendlier than the pairs ever did. The pairs had each other, so smurf the Big Giant Hand. Plus, since they were males, they tended to have one become the alpha (fatass, food-hog) and one not so much (gaunt, hungry).
I've also taken care of a guinea pig, which was a cute animal, but too damn smart. It'd hear a cutting board, and eventually just the fridge being opened, and think that she was going to be getting carrots or other fruits and veggies. And she would not shut up until she got it. And she also flung her poop across the room when it got caught in her claws.
So what I'm basically saying is, good for you. Provide a good home and plenty of toilet paper tubes/paperboard egg cartons. And I know gerbils are often allergic to the cedar chip bedding. Not sure if the same's true for hamsters, but just so you know to check it out.

If you want a cheaper treat, try crackers. My gerbil went nuts over them, although he just chewed most of them and ate a little. My sister's hamster liked them too. They could be stale as hell too, they didn't care.

My sister has a chineese dwarf hamster, named Beaner. Overall a pretty decent pet, though it makes a giant mess out of its cage almost as soon as it is cleaned. It just turned a year old and I was a little suprised because since it was a few months old it has had a decent sized growth on its butt. The sad fact is that it will be cheaper to buy a new one after this goes then to pay a vet to find out what is wrong with her.

But hamsters and other rodents with "growths" on the butts usually means their just male. I used to breed them and rats for a job in high school.

Don't do what I did when I was 5 and forget to get it out of your pocket when you put your pants in the wash.
I still miss Hamily.
