People had doubt when CM Punk moved to the WWE. He had a good but under appreciated run on OVW, WWE's then developmental territory. When he debuted on WWE Tv on ECW, people still had doubt. When he was racking up wins, internet columnist and "insiders' were stirring the pot of him having the heatz.
Question now is, if Punk would be released tomorrow, has it come to the point of us being okay with it. Would we not blame backstage heat on it, would we be satisfied by his tenure and not say that WWE somehow tarnished him?

i dunno about anyone else, but i'm satisfied with his wwe run. people sorta missed the point with his "something left to prove" title reign, but i enjoyed it, and think that he's had some fantastic matches. the whole "punk has heat" trend is what soured me on wrestling news sites, since it blatantly wasn't true. you'd have triple h, the man who supposedly hated punk and forced him to give up the pepsi plunge, putting punk over as "the future" on one of the biggest shows of the year. you had vince mcmahon, who alledgedly thought punk didn't have "the look" praising him in interviews. the observer said that punk was being forgotten about as MITB because no one liked him backstage, and a week later punk won the world title. stories about punk being a hated outcast in the big bad world of WWE are bollocks. CM Punk is a great wrestler, who has taken advantage of a great opportunity provided to him.
that's my view on things, anyway.

Punk could of had a Goldberg-esque win streak and people would still complain

It's like no matter what WWE does with CM Punk there's just no winning with the smarks. He loses it's because HE GOTZ TEH HEATZ111!!!!!!1111!!. He won the belt they whine about how he's being pushed and I'm sure if he got the Superman John Cena style push they'd have whined about that and turned on him.

I would blame backstage heat if he was outright released, since he's over with the crowd and moves merch.
He's not Cena, but WWE is certainly better off having him than not having him.
If he just loses some matches? Nah.

I really think he's going to be in for a huge push come summerslam
Really WWE has made so much punk merchandise, that you know he's signed one of their OMG FOREVER contracts.
In my opinion he's done more maturing in WWE as a performer in-ring from '07-'08 than any other wrestler bar Cena, Orton, and the Hardyz

I'd be content with it. The guy was one of their top faces and I'd say is very recognizable by the WWE audience. Won the World and Tag titles and looks like he's getting the IC belt and got to co-main event a MSG house show which I'm sure he was thrilled about. He did very well for himself in the time he spent there.

Tarnish him? In his run with WWE Punk has surpassed everything he had done before and he could do in the future after his eventual release from the E. They could fire him tomorrow and give him Randy Savage's Treatment of Silence ever since, and his stint on ECW and RAW would still be the peak of his career, and the time of maximum exposure of his ilfe. Some of his blind marks wouldn't be happy unless he'll break Sammartino AND Flair's records, along with Undertaker's streak at Mania, so it's not as if their take on Punk's legacy is that meaningful They're more Catholic than the Pope, so to speak

Loki's right, his stock as a commodity has never been higher. If he went back to the indies or TNA, he would command a higher price.

I would not be happy to see him go yet. He has to wrestle HBK at least once on a PPV, before he goes.

You know what's funny? 99.9% of the people who thought CM Punk was/is being held down don't post here anymore. Or they don't post, rather, about that particular subject.
