so i was re watching no way out 03 tonight and before the match with HHH and Steiner(ugh!) they showed a recap of how Evolution formed and it made me think, what was with when the former Deacon Batista came to Raw and Flair randomly became his manager, he was known as Dave Batista and at the time I thought he was wicked generic, was he a face or heel?

He was a heel, they built up his RAW debut with video packages for several weeks before he showed up and had his first RAW match.
I think it was right after his first match on RAW (he squashed Justin Credible if I remember right), Ric Flair found him backstage and talked to him. The basic, you are gonna be the man stuff. And from that point Flair pretty much became his manager.

He was a heel when he moved to Raw (and before it). I don't think he was ever billed as 'Dave Batista,' but Flair called him that a few times backstage. He wasn't a babyface until he turned on Triple H and Flair and left Evolution. He didn't have much of a character when he left Smack Down. Obviously his deacon/religious character was completely dropped and he dressed differently. His only real character back then was that he was a silent, inexperienced wrestler and Flair and Triple H thought he had the goods so they brought him into Evolution.

Didn't they have him destroy D'Von before he moved?

You know, I'm not going to to lie, but for a few moments I was afraid this was going to be a rumor thread about yet ANOTHER person Dave has apparently tried to put to bed...

Didn't they have him destroy D'Von before he moved? While he was still on Smackdown, he and D-Von were arguing a lot, and finally one week Batista beat the hell out of him backstage. I think he threw him through a locker room door. I believe they had a match as well, which Batista won. He then vanished until the RAW debut vignettes started about a month later. I also remember one backstage segment where D-Von was in Stephanie's office and she said something about not wanting Batista to get away. But apparently he did.

Please tell me I'm not the only one who thought that Batista looked like a bigger badass in 2003 than he does today.
He looked like he would kick the shit out of someone just for looking at him wrong.

Here's his RAW debut vs. Justin Credible (very short match), followed by the backstage segment with Ric Flair...
