youtube wouldn't let me upload it, but here's the locker scene with Paul E Normous. www.disperseit.com/view.php?id=26769He's the guy with the big chest tattoo. (Ram shakes his hand as soon as he enters the room) The promoter calls him by name.

If plot is the only device in film, then this movie wouldn't have been made. Definitely not a Hollywood cookie-cutter as was suggested earlier on (EDIT)the page before this one, because of the nature of the characters intertwined with environment in this--a character-driven movie.
I said it before and I'll say it again: the plunge at the end is a more cerebral ending that Aronofsky is pulling off than people are giving credit for. It's not about life or death in the physical sense. Sure, it's left as such for viewers who don't want to work as hard, but the storytelling through that last sequence of editing combined with some of the subtle juxtaposition that precedes this finale goes hand-in-hand with the character tragedy.
It's like chiaroscuro in visual art. A lot of people are seeing the image at the forefront, which is staring them right in the face, but the magic of the piece is the dark, subtle filler enhancing that foreground effect from the background that makes it much less difficult for the casual viewer to identify with.
(See Page 8 for a sample of what I'm getting at.)

Saw the Wrestler yesterday, quite impressed. It gives the viewer alot to think about, for example the identity crises that both Ram and Cassidy face throughout the film. The realisation of who each really is and the distinction between the creation and the creator.

Saw it and it was the BOMB. Will give wrestling much more respect. Did remind me a lot of "Beyond the Mat" in many ways.
Spoiler:
As far as the scene where he cut his hand on the meat slicer, loved the twist. It looked like he was going to cut it by accident out of frustration, but him punching it on purpose really caught me off guard. His hand healed a wee bit too quick and well, though I've known people who heal amazingly quick (not THAT quick though). Still a great film and a must-see.

SPOILER:
When he looked up towards the curtain and Cassidy wasn't there, my eyes began to water. I didn't cry, but my eyes welled up. It was so sad. Ram just gave a slight smile as if to say "I knew it". As though the last remaining person in the real world who could possibly give a damn about him had deserted him, thus proving himself right that nobody in the real world cared about him or loved him. Had he saw Cassidy's face right there, I feel maybe he would've climbed down from the turnbuckle and perhaps attempted some kind of normal life with her. Wrestling obviously was a placebo to hide the the pain and fill the gaps created by his failings in real life.
On talking with my friends, it's interesting how people have two different opinions on Pam's leaving. Some feel she abandoned Ram because she knew she could never compete with his "other lover" (wrestling) and he chose it over her, thus she left dejected.
Others feel she walked away because she grew to care about him and potentially love him, and it hurt her too much to see him in pain and getting hurt himself in the ring.
Which side do you guys sit on?

Finally got to see it yesterday and......wow. What an emotional rollercoaster that film was. It will be hard for any film to top this for me this year.
I know a lot has already been said about Rourke's performance but I don't realistically see a better contender for the Best Actor Oscar, he went through the whinger in that film, Tomei and Wood also deserve possible nods too. And yes Tomei is smoking.
Everything else has probably already been said but I hope this will change the public perception of wrestling for the better.

I keep thinking what a disaster this film would've been with Nick Cage as Randy The Ram lol.

Oscar noms are announced Thursday. Let's see if it gets the same love the Globes gave. Don't hold your breath on anything more than Best Song, Best Actor, and probably Best Supporting Actress nods. Springsteen is a near lock to win, Tomei is a dark horse though it isnt likely, and Rourke is one half of a two man race for Best Actor with Sean Penn for Milk. Sadly, theres only a very, very tiny chance it gets a Best Picture nod at this point.

Eh, even at that point, that's the exact same love that it got at the GG's(Best song win, best actor win, and best sup. actress nom), so I'm totally content.

I think the the race is a threee way right now between Rourke, Penn and Langella (who was incredible BTW) I think it's going to go to Rourke, simply because the Academy likes a comeback story, and Penn already has one and the Oscars aren't big fans of repeats (not saying it doesn't happen, it's just not very common since the 70s)

Which side do you guys sit on? I dont' think she really leaves at the end. She just looks away and stops watching the match because she sees the pain that he is going through. I think symbolically when he looks up though and sees that she is not there it shows that she isn't really there for him. There is a lot of different ways to interpret the movie which is what makes it good. I like movies that challenge the viewer rather than giving a straight answer like a happy ending because that isn't really real or true to real life.

This film was everything I thought and hoped it would be. Just outstanding. I pretty much echo everyone's praise of the film.
Mickey certainly deserves the Oscar and I hope that the film gets a Best Picture nod in a crowded field.

I FINALLY saw this movie tonight. Like many of you, I've been dying to see it since the project was announced and it did not disappoint...mostly. The acting in the film was top notch, as we watch this poor bastard self destruct at every possible turn. The scenes where his daughter tore into him really tear at you too. I loved the way they showed the various lacerations after his match with Necro Butcher as well.
I definitely shed a few tears and just couldn't help it. There is NOTHING good about this film in that it is the single most depressing movie I have ever seen. The poor guy loses EVERYTHING and it's all his fault for his stupid decisions. His daughter, his blooming relationship, and, in my interpretation, his life. That scene where he looks up to see if Pam is still watching is a real heartwrencher too. I almost don't want to put myself through this movie again since it was so depressing, but it was astonishing.

The Academy Award is between Penn and Rourke, from all indications. Its a tossup at this point.
Langella was a lock for a nomination, but hes not winning.

Rourke nominated for Best Actor, Tomei for Best Supporting Actress.
Also, there will be a segment on The Wrestler tomorrow night on SmackDown, plus WWE are in talks with Rourke to appear at WrestleMania.
