Remember back in eh iunno 96-99 when wrestling was really big? I mean the super stars back then really seemed like super stars...Rock, Austin, Sting, Hogan, Goldberg, Kevin Nash and there were more too. Wrestling just use to seem so much more interesting, and have so much more hype behind it back then. Yea, it was probably because of the competition between WWF and WCW, but still now days I just don't see in super in the stars of WWE today. John Cena has the mold of Austin, but for some reason he just bores the hell out of me. They attempted to mold Orton like THe Rock, but something was missing a big something. Then the current main eventers Triple H, HBK, Angle all of them lack the the star appeal.

Can I ask you a serious question Mr Goldberg? Why do you still watch when you NEVER have a good thing to say about the product? I mean, complaining is alright.. but do you even enjoy it at all? It doesn't seem like you do.. I wouldn't watch it if I couldn't find anything good about it.

But I hope that something happens to make wrestling exciteing like it was during the Monday Night wars.

A lot of people feel that way. I'm sure something big will catch on someday though. It normally does. Some would say they are prepping Cena to be that next huge attraction... but people will only buy it for so long.
Who knows what midcarder could be World champ this time next year? Take Orton, Cena and Batista for example.

LOL!! That's had me laughing for about a minute now!! Was that a Family Guy ref?? Yeah it was... I pray that Turner or some other crazy billionaire uses his money to start up a real threat to WWE...... *sigh* I'm not as negative as Mr.Goldberg here or others but I can't help but feel we were really spoiled from 98-2002.....give or take a year........this is depressing.

There's a line in Sunset Blvd, in which Gloria Swanson says, " I am big! It's the pictures that got small.." ( I have now lost all of you with a reference to a movie 40 years old) I think it's a little bit of the opposite in the WWE's case. The stage stayed big, but the stars got small.
At the time of the Monday Night Wars, the public never expected 'wraslin' to get as big as it did. To the fans, we had never seen so much money on the screen. We were used to 2 cameras and a national guard venue.
The star power busted though the limitations with Austin, Hart, Hogan (YES, Hogan!), Flair, Rock, Goldberg, DX, NWO and so on. The stage had to get bigger to contain it. Now that we don't have the glut of superstars we had then, it could seem that the star power is not there, because the stage stayed big. There is not enough players to fill it. It's seems as though there is not enough star power, because we still remember what it was like 7 years ago.

I think also that we have to recognize that wrestling is a cyclical business. Pre-Monday night wars, the product was pretty lame. I mean, we had Sid, Undertaker and Shawn as champs. Not really that exciting.
It all depends on who they can build the company around. When it was rock and stone cold, then the product looked really good. you can't build a company around batista and cena. it just can't be done.
but it's like any other sport. the nba needed michael jordan to get where it is today. ditto, mark mcguire and mlb, tiger and the pga, and gretzky and the nhl. Stars aren't born everyday. Be patient and wrestling will be good again one day.

It's good now....to me at least, it's just with so many talented people it could be even better.......competition is needed.

What happens is that a "star" tries to be pushed, or someone that has a legitimate shot is pushed to soon.
However, I've been noticing lately that the new "stars" are ones that develope in the background quietly, and then when given the chance to shine, they do. Look at Batista. He played the background for much of the time he's been in the WWE, but he slowly started to catch on, and now he's a star.
Look at Christian as well. He's almost pulled an Austin (although not on the same level). He's a HEEL, the BAD GUY, has been for a while now...but how many "Peep" signs and face pops does he get now?

well some guys have the star potential but or reasons unknown (see Triple H and his amazing glass ceiling) are preventing em acheiving it

I don't really agree with you. I think the majority of guys on the roster are either over the hill, or just mediocre.
I agree that a lot of guys have been burried by trips, but in all seriousness, can you see RVD or Eddie carrying the entire company the way the Rock or Austin could? They just don't have IT.
It takes something special to be a star and Trips wouldn't be able to stop someone's momentum if they really had it.

I just feel that the WWE is just trying to hard to make stars. Cena has only caught on, because Hip-Hop is trendy.

the stars are still big, it's just that it's not thing "in" thing to like wrestling. Back when it was cool to watch wrestling everybody knew who stone cold was because he was the top guy when wrestling was at it's peak. If it hits the top again, i'm sure the top guy would be considered a big star as well. I feel a resurgance coming some time soon with the new batch of wrestlers coming in. wrestling will be fine in the next four or five years, which coincidentally should be the time Trips retires.
