What's the story with Shawn's back? I had been under the impression that his career was over after his match with Austin, and I just realized that that match was over 7 years ago, and it's Austin who has been retired for some time now. When HBK took several years off, I was sure he was done, but he's been back for nearly 3 years now. Did he have some kind of surgery? That springboard crossbody he did on Edge sure didn't look like a guy who has a bad back. He does stuff like that all the time now. Is he simply resigned to the fact that he'll spend his middle age years on in a wheel chair, so he thinks he can't hurt it any worse? He doesn't move like somebody with back trouble.

he took the austin/rock era off to recouperate and have a family now hes back. the kind of exercise he does is good for your back as hes obviously fit.

I believe the problem was more with his smile, or lack of it, than his back. ;D

These days I'm more worried about Angle's neck or Flair in general.

Being an Hbk mark and all.....I dont know if he was really hurt and all even though through personal beliefs and through talks with my wrestlin buddies we think it was all a work as HBK wrestles like he never missed a beat nowadays...and anyone who saw HBK vs Venom in Shawns fed where Hbk won the belt in his own fed he looked grand......anyway figure it out....I am happy he is bak so I can see him again is all.

I don't know if he was milking it, or just scared. After all he did miss the most popular and profitable era of the company after he left and came back in its cooldown period (especially since he didn't become in tune with his spirituality until a couple months before he returned to Television, so he was still a jerk and would have fit in perfectly).

I'm not sure how much he was milking it. If you watch that match with austin, its clear he's in a lot of pain. Plus he only wrestled about 2 or 3 matches in the 3 or so months before. I think he made the smart decision leaving when he did. He knew his back couldn't take any more. I'm not sure how he is able to still go on now. Probably due to his workout plus taking over 4 years off to let his back heal up a bit. As JMoney said, he missed the most profitable time in the history of the WWE. If he could work, he would have.

I think it's Angle's turn to take a few years off, like HBK.

You know, as someone who has had back problems, I think that he decided that he had reached as far as he could go in his 'in ring' career, and that he would rather be more safe than sorry.
Plus, being away from the ring that long really would heal you up, as it takes at least a year for your back to fully recover from any type of major injury to it.
I remember when he first came back he said he didn't want to wrestle much, if at all, but then he said the more he did it, the more he felt like his old self again, so he felt he could do it.
I think it's great, because we get more years of HBK.

As far as I know Michaels originally did his back in during his casket match against the Undertaker at the Royal Rumble in 1998. At the end of the match when Kane interferes you can see Michaels having problems and wasn't able to stand up to close the casket himself. He missed the next PPV and at Wrestlemania he was lacking the usual high spots that filled his repotoire. Personally i think Michaels genuinely believed his career was over. It's only fairly recently hes been able to work a full time schedule.

Michaels did have surgery on his back. I remember reading an interview in an old issue of WOW Magazine years ago and about 2 years into his "retirement" and it showed a picture of the scar on his lower back.
It is legit, as you can see he has lost some muscle due to not being physically able to lift heavy weights anymore.
I'm not a religious guy, but I love to see stories like Michaels and Eddie, where they turned a bad situation into an incredible return story. I say more power to Michaels. He hasn't had a bad match since Mania and I think his passion is stronger than ever.
