Saying "I Quit" not mean submitting?
Last night Cena said the match between him and JBL would not be determined by pinfalls, submissions, etc. but only when one person said "I Quit"

i guess they mean no tapping out. saying the words "I QUIT" is more humiliating than just tapping out.

This has been the format for an "I Quit" Match since the Rock v. Mankind at the 99 Rumble I believe. I Quit matches were originally modern day submission matches, but have now been turned into a match with a mic, while a submission match is what it is.

You have to beat your opponent so badly until he quits. I have o confusion between an I Quit match and a Submission match.

The logic is, in a submission match, someone would submit while in a submission hold.
But in an I Quit match, a person can quit at anytime.
Examples being, HHH tapping out (submitting) while in the Scorpion on Raw. But Mankind saying I Quit (albeit it was a recording) after taking several chairshots during his match with Rock.

so basically, you could kick the crap outta someone until they could take no more, BUT they are more likely to say it if they are in constant pain, so submission holds are a plus.

I think people automatically think an 'i quit' match means a submission match.
For the most part you are correct, however, if JBL starts beating the hell out of Cena with a chair, then he asks the ref to ask Cena is he wants to quit, this is one was to make somebody say "i quit" without having his a$$ tap in a submission hold.
I only say that cus I definetely don't see Cena or JBL being great mat technicians, so I don't see it as a submission match.

Not quite, the Terry Funk/Ric Flair I Quit was a mic one.

When the Rock and Mankind had an "I Quit" match a few years ago, it was mic'ed too.
Magnum T.A. and Tully Blanchard had one of the greatest I Quit matches in history. I urge you to check that match out before you watch anything you might have to shell out cash for.
And yes, it was miked as well.

Breat Hart vs Bob Backlund was another good "I Quit" match, believe it was at a Wrestlemania maybe? The finish was fregin sweet when Hart had Backlund in his cross face chicken wing and Backlund barely muttered I Quit like he had no choice but to say it but didn't want to give Bret any satisfaction at the same time.

I Quit Matches are one of my favorites because they tend to be brutal, this one will be brutal too and I see JBL taking some big bumps (or at least way more than Cena)
