Who do you find made the biggest mistake turning down a movie role?
To me: Actor Warren Beatty turning down Bill in Kill Bill.
Actress Molly Ringwald turning down Pretty Woman.

Eddie Murphy in an interview years ago said:
"When I was doing Trading Places with Day Aykroyd, he was telling me about this script he was working on about guys that go around catching ghosts. He said he wanted me to be in it. I was like, "Catching ghosts? Get the f*** outta here."
So, I guess that would be dumb. Although Ernie Hudson was awesome.

I think Leonardo Dicaprio would have made a great Yellow Bastard (Sin City).

Tom Selleck losing out on the role of Indiana Jones is probably one of the more infamous, though he didn't really turn it DOWN, as much as he just couldn't do it due to Magnum PI being in production.

Will Smith turned down Neo. In that Eddie Murphy interview, he said he turned down a lot of big roles over the year, he was really open about it and said he regretted it. Roger Rabbit being another. Sean Penn turned down The Joker in The Dark Knight. I think he would have been awesome too. He would have taken it so seriously.

Buddy Ebsen, who got fame for playing Jed Clampett in the Beverly Hillbillies was supposed to be the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz, but he was allergic to the silver makeup. But that's another example of not being able to take a role.

I'm not 100% sure if it's actually true, but I remember hearing a rumor a few years ago that Robert Englund auditioned for the role of Luke Skywalker.

Bad Boys Beverly Hills Cop Dead Poets Society Grindhouse Highlander Platoon Pulp Fiction Rain Man Revolver The Silence of the Lambs Tombstone (maybe) Top Gun

I still don't believe that Bad Boys was originally written for Jon Lovitz and Dana Carvey.

I got the winner right here.
Richard Grieco turned down Speed because he thought the script sucked.

Robert Redford turned down some interesting roles:
- Bonnie & Clyde (Warren Beatty took it) - The Graduate (Dustin Hoffman) - The Godfather (Al Pacino as Michael Corleone) - JFK (Kevin Costner) - Unfaithful (Richard Gere)
One site says he was once considered to play Rocky and James Bond, though I'd take that with a grain of salt.

He did, then after getting turned down he told his close friend Mark Hammill to give it a try.. and the rest was history. And this one wasn't his fault but: Burt Reynolds for Bond.

What does Vader have in his nightmares, though? Ehhh...maybe Freddy shows him that he'll be played by Hayden Christensen?

Quentin Tarantino wanted James Woods to play a role in Reservoir Dogs, and made him five different cash offers. Woods' agent refused the offers without ever mentioning it to Woods as the sums offered were well below what Woods would usually receive. When Tarantino and Woods later met for the first time, Woods learned of the offer and was annoyed enough to get a new agent. Tarantino avoided telling Woods which role he was offered "because the actor who played the role was magnificent anyway". It is widely accepted that the role that Tarantino was referring to was Mr. Orange.
I actually could not picture Woods as Mr. Orange. Definetley Mr. Pink though.

I could see Woods as Madsens's Mr. Blond. Especially back then.

After George Lazenby played James Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, he turned down the role when it was offered to him for the next movie. According to him he thought James Bond wouldn't be a relevant character anymore. That the character had worn out it's welcome. Now he admits to regretting the choice. Too bad. I thought he kicked ass as Bond, and I would have liked to see him get satisfactory revenge for the murder of Teresa.
