Growing up, did anybody have any local late night horror movie shows in your area? They usually featured a cheesy vampire or wacky ghoul hosting a horrible horror movie from the 1950 - 70's. In the Kansas City area, I lucked out and had two. A vampire, Crematia Mortem, who hosted Creature Feature... And on another channel, there was Friday Fright Night, which featured a disembodied skull /laughing host whose voice will be very familiar to WrestleCrap Radio listeners. I'm sure some of you had to have the syndicated Movie Macabre w/ Elvira in your area. I'm glad that some of those episodes have been released on DVD. Another favorite of mine is Washington DC's Count Gore De Vol, who still has his weekly Creature Feature show, free of charge on the internet. www.countgore.comThe reason I started this thread was because a few days ago, I received a dvd copy in a trade of this bizarre guy I had never heard of, Baltimore's Ghost Host, and was curious to see what other people grew up with.

Actually I recently bought a book about Chicago area Horror hosts, like Svengoolie-fascinating stuff and I'm trying to get involved with a little project of my own

Well, I didn't know of any local late night guys (well not in the 80s-mid 90s that is). But, my dad was a fan of Commander USA's Groovy Movies on the USA Network and let my brother and I watch it a few times. More info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commander_USA%27s_Groovie_MoviesThere's a local cable access channel that frequently has horror shows with a guy named Davey Horror. I've never checked it out though.

As a kid it was just USA Up All Night and TNT Monstervision. As an adult, however, I discovered Pittsburgh PA's The It's Alive Show, featuring the ghoulish Professor Emcee Square, Stiffy the Dead Clown, and Leah the (chesty) mummy. They usually show public domain horror movies from the 50s-60s, and have skits and a band and stuff. I thought they disappeared off the face of the earth when their station turned into a 24/7 test-pattern, but apparently their on a new station. www.theitsaliveshow.com

Commander USA and Lefty were legends. On another topic, I just found this Reaper guy a few moments ago. Wish I could've seen him in the 80's. Looks incredibly cheesetastic...

I also was a cable brat, so I mostly liked Joe Bob Briggs on TNT. He was a lot better than Gilbert Godfrey and Ronda Shear since Joe Bob actually watched the movies and offered some incite about the movie, actors, director, and what have you. Locally, in the Green Bay area we had Ned the Dead. He made a lot of corny jokes to the stage hands and rarely seemed to know much about the movie he was playing. I didn't find him very entertaining however I enjoyed the b movies he played late night.

Commander USA and Lefty were legends. Yep. I'm surprised that it still dominates my dim memories of the 80s (along with WCCW, Facts of Life, Diff'rent Strokes, Mr.T and a few other things..remember when Pepsi came in glass bottles and used real sugar?).

When my mom and dad were little kids growing up in the NYC area in the 50s and 60s they had Zacherley, "The Cool Ghoul". He was way before my time but I discovered Zach thru my dad telling me about him and then I picked up a tape years ago called "The Zacherley Archives" that has a few of his old shows. Great stuff. (btw, American Scary is a great little documentary on horror movie hosts, get it!) And of course I discovered the iconic Joe Bob Briggs thru TNT Monstervision on Saturday Nights (and he'd been doing Joe Bob's Drive-In Theater on The Movie Channel for about 10 years). God, I miss seeing JB on TNT every Saturday. When I lived in Florida, we had Elvira, but she was on WWOR which was a NY station. Good old WWOR. Always showing great crappy and not crappy horror movies late at night. Zach was also on WOR and WPIX and ABC Channel 7.

That's funny. I was just watching Jack The Bear where Danny DeVito is a late night horror movie host. I was wondering why i've never seen one on my local TV stations.
