Haven't seen STAR TREK yet...but I know better than to cross the Trekkies. They will attack with a vengeance when their "thing" is questioned. Was wondering where you got to, though. Yeah - hopefully the other thread posters don't mind, but I'm going to talk a little non-horror for a bit here when my opinion is, at least a little (I think), more respected. *caution-SPOILERS ahead* Okay - this new Star Trek movie starts off really, really good, and the script surprised me by spending a lot of time actually building up the characters as likable people. But halfway through it, a boiling point is reached between Spock and Kirk leading to Spock banishing Kirk form the Enterprise, and while the incident itself isn't the instigating factor...instant jump the shark moment. The movie had actually been a humorous, fun, character-focused piece up until this point, but from that point on the movie turned into EVERY other damn action movie to come out in the last five years (complete with the Michael Bay-influenced "ADD cam"), and I found myself BORED by it where just minutes earlier I had been enthralled. HOWEVER...I think that what will eventually happen to the popular opinion of this movie is going to be similar to what happened with Iron Man and Bay's Transformers. With both of those movies, the respective fanbases had their initial nerdgasm, but then re-appraised the movie looking at it a bit more critically, at which point they noticed their MANY faults. And I believe the same thing will eventually happen to Star Trek version 2K9. *SPOILER, and NON-HORROR RANT over* I promise I won't do that too often, WC horror faithful. Please don't send Jason, Freddy, Michael, Leatherface and the Tall Man after me. Agreed....but I hold no promises on restraining Kayako. You know what they say...whenever Trekkies feel that their world has been insulted...a powerful CURSE is born. This leads to all manner of heated exchanges and INSULTS against the doubter, until he or she either renounces their previous position, or goes INSANE from the flaming. Beware, TR...for you have instigated UHUR-ON: TREK GRUDGE! ;D

I'm going to hate TR forever now for disagreeing with me on Star Trek! Please don't hate me, DP. In all seriousness, though, while I said it in the Trek thread, there were parts of the movie that I really liked...I just don't think that it's QUITE the instant classic that apparently everyone but me feels it is.

I'm going to hate TR forever now for disagreeing with me on Star Trek! *CRR----OOOOO-AAAAAA----KKKKKKKK* MAN...that would make such an awesome SNL/Robot Chicken parody...with Kayako in an Uhura uniform, and some horny Trekkie trying to make out with her, only to suffer dire consequences....ultimately leading to William Shatner himself logging on to the cursed site, getting into the flame war, and summoning Kayako unto himself. ;D

Not that I'm surprised, however, this being the internet.

I'm not a huge Iron Man comic fan so this comment kind of surprised me. Are Iron Man fans complaining about the film? Not that I'm surprised, however, this being the internet. Alright, since you asked for it...more non-horror ranting (Kayako, Sadako and Asami are all coming for me as I speak). By and large, no, they don't bitch about Iron Man, but on pretty much all the message boards that I frequent, I DID notice that after a month or so of its theatrical release, threads kept popping up of the "Was Iron Man really THAT good?" ilk, with more than a few replies in agreement in all of these threads. The two biggest complaints leveled against it (and the ones echoed by myself) were the complete and utter non-surprise of who the villain turns out to be (even for non-fans of the comic like myself) and the film totally dropping and wasting the storyline of the terrorist cell that captures Tony Stark so that we could get evil businessman villain #5,787. I've heard that the storyline may be picked up in the sequel...but who knows. I, along with a small but passionate contingent, feel that Iron Man is a movie very similar to the first Pirates of the Caribbean film - a mediocre movie whose value gets overrated because the main actors do such an awesome job with their respective roles. And I'm sure I'll get mauled for that, as well. But understand something, people - I'm NOT somebody who goes around hating on popular films just because I feel like being ironic/a dick. I loved The Dark Knight and Gran Torino just like everyone else (two films that I have never heard anyone say a bad word about)...but those movies seemed to actually give a damn about the impact of their story. The Dark Knight was a superhero movie that used its action sparingly, and built up its hero characters SO MUCH that when the action scenes DID hit, I carried a genuine emotional investment in the action. With Iron Man, yeah, Downey does an amazing job playing the role that he's written, but...I just didn't find the arc that the character goes through especially deep or engaging. Sorry. Alright, now retiring non-horror rants, as I feel this is becoming the "TR vents about whatever the hell he feels like" thread, and that's something I do not want.

Heh, I've heard quite a bit of flack against Dark Knight, including stuff from myself. I never found that movie very interesting at all and I'm way more of a fan of his comics then Iron Mans, and yet I found Iron Man to be a far superior film. Oh and more on Horror, am I the only one that watches the Drag Me to Hell ads and just sees yet another drab scare cord horror with lots of "BOO!" stuff and little else?

It's not uncommon for a studio to make a trailer misrepresenting a film. I think horror fans trust that it's Sam Raimi and it should be good. Really I think that's the problem with american horror cinema. It tends to rely more on the scare as opposed to the build to the scare. Watching the descent recently really brought this home to me.

RE: Iron Man
I'm a huge fan of the comic books, but when I initially watched the movie (in the theater), I felt that it was good, but not nearly as good as it could've been. I still think there's some potential that wasn't lived up to, but I like the movie more upon repeat viewings.
ANYWAY!!!
Last night I watched Werner Herzog's English-language remake of Nosferatu (there's also a German-language version of the movie that's supposed to be different somehow...once I watch this version, I'll let you know). Anyway, it's basically another telling of the Dracula story, so I won't go into plot details, and skip straight to my own opinion.
Herzog isn't really telling a story with this picture, rather he's collecting a series of beautiful images associated with vampirism, old world landscapes, and The Plague. The story actually feels secondary to the artistry. Not that this is a negative, but two hours of a film with no real momentum building up honestly isn't for everybody.
But in between the waterfalls and slow motion bat-wing-flappings is a good performance by Klaus Kinski as Count Dracula. Since he's going based on Max Schreck's Orlaf, naturally he's not going to be the sort of charismatic dude we're used to. Instead, Kinski's Dracula is sheepish and timid, only really springing to life (such as it is) at the sight of blood. He's a very creepy presence throughout the film.
Also on hand is an annoying Renfield (he sounds incredibly forced...maybe its because he's not comfortable speaking English), and Lucy Harker (our heroine), a woman so pale she blends into the white bedsheets. Seriously, as a fan of pale women, I was turned on AND thinking "she's a little TOO pale" at the same time. In a movie where people are getting sick and dying, she kinda looks like she's already there before the plot even gets going.
At any rate, the imagery (and Isabelle Adjani as Lucy, inspite of all that) and the music are quite beautiful, and this film is propelled by creepy ambience (which is refreshing in a time when the "jump scare" seems to be king). I'll give it 3.7 stars out of 5.

First viewing of the Klaus Kinski version of Nosferatu, DSR? I personally love the film; it's probably comfortably in my top 20.
For some Kinski-related hilarity, check out the mid-'80s Sci-horror flick Creature, where Kinski plays a minor role, and also prominently features the "acting" of former Playboy model Marie Laurin. Her expression of "terror" just before being attacked by the man-eating alien creature in the film is priceless.

But the first time was back when I was in high school, before I could appreciate things with artistic value. If Adjani had whipped out those pale breasts, I would've loved it. Since she didn't, I had to wait several years to mature.

Derek Mears for predator reboot?? fridaythe13thfilms.com/blog/derek-mears-aka-jason-voorhees-rumored-for-predators-reboot/Yes, I do spend alot of time on the F13films site, lol. I also tend to visit halloweenmovies.com and joblo.com/arrow from time to time. As for the whole Kane Hodder as Jason debate (one page too late as it may be), I personally felt Hodder's Jason wasn't that good. Aside for part VII, Hodder was in the worst of the Friday The 13th films. I was surprised fair enough when he wasn't chosen for Freddy Vs Jason but I can't say I was upset. I'd have been more annoyed if Robert Englund hadn't been chosed as Freddy.

I had to get up early this morning to do some freelance work, and put on horror suckfest Shrooms - this scarred me (as opposed to scared). Question is, from my DVDaf listing, what should I watch tomorrow morning when I wake up early to do the exact same? I'm up for anything, as long as it's horror.
