According to Wrestlezone.com: Credit: F4WOnline.com
The Undertaker will be taking a hiatus from WWE due to injury. 'Taker is expected to be out of action for a few months due to both knee and hip injury problems.
Due to the injury, Undertaker wasn't even brought to the television tapings last week, despite being in Madison Square Garden. As of that day, the talk was that 'Taker will be undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his hip and will be forced to miss a few months.
Apparently Undertaker's injury and hiatus was the reason for the quick face turn of John Morrison, as well as the placement of CM Punk as a top babyface after the WWE draft.
Undertaker joins other top stars Shawn Michaels and Triple H, who will be out of action as well for a while, and possibly Jeff Hardy - who could be done with WWE soon as well.
And in an interview with The Daily Mirror, Batista says that he is heavily considering retirement after his contract expires next year. So assuming that they aren't able to add enough zeros to the end of Jeff's paycheck to convince him to stay, it looks like we are heading toward a very lean period in terms of main eventers.

Awesome.
It'll be a transition, but its gonna be fun to see who steps up and fills the gaps. The next several months could be VERY interesting.

Good. WWE needs to stop trying to run everything with their current, aging main eventers and push their younger mid carders. Not because I like most of the mid carders, but if they don't push them sooner or later, the situation will become MORE dire when even more main eventers step out.

2-time world champion...THE GREAT KHALI!
But seriously, this is a better chance than ever to push guys like MVP, Morrison, Punk and Kofi to a new level. Here's hoping they actually do so.

The time for the old guard to leave is coming.....it'll be sad to see them go, but a welcome leave.
It's not like WWE doesn't have guys they could pull from the midcard for main events......Punk, MVP, Kennedy, Christian (WWECW is a midcard belt imo), hell even Matt Hardy. Below them is Miz, Morrisson, and Swagger who will be ready in another year or so. And they still have their current main event guys like Orton, Cena, HHH (he'll be back soon), Edge, Big Show, Jericho, and Batista (who's supposedly heading out next year).

The problem is getting the audience to accept them as main eventers without making them feel like someone has been pushed down their throats. I think they are ready to accept Punk, but someone like Kofi Kingston is nowhere near ready for that position. It will be very interesting to see who steps up.

I wouldn't say lean as there is the opportunity for their spots to be filled by others waiting in the wings on their respective shows. However, it does mean pushing guys with a less proven track record of drawing money when WWE is struggling to sell its PPVs already. Of course if they'd been doing more to elevate new stars sooner than this then they wouldn't be in such a messy situation. As Dave Meltzer and others have repeatedly argued very convincingly the health of a promotion is determined in large part by its ability always create new stars by using its established stars to put new guys over (that doesn't always mean losing the match). In other words it's a means of preserving the species so to speak.
Lets just hope the young guys continue to step up to the plate well like they did last week. The key will be to have patience in building these guys from week to week and not get cold feet like they have in the past.

Doesnt Taker usually miss a few months per year?

Doesnt Taker usually miss a few months per year? He's been pretty consistent with it since he went out in '99. He obviously misses more time some years than others. IMO he's earned his time off but at the same time, it's hurt his career legacy as far as title reigns go. He's never had a world title reign I was impressed by. His run with the hardcore title was great however.

I'd agree with the MVP thing since hes already 35 and probably wont be around long, i'd give him a shot, only I think Taker and MVP are on different brands.
I dont think Taker has clogged the Main Event picture as much as some others over the past few years.

When your main event scene is pushing 40 or missed large chunks of time due to injury, you'd think making new stars would have been a priority. Instead, Orton's been up and down, MVP was given a 6 month losing streak, Jeff Hardy isn't long for wrestling (I like the guy but, lets face it) and Punk was yo-yo'd worse than anything not named Duncan.
It really is the New Generation all over again.

HHH is still going to be here for a few years now, he's only taking a couple months off for whatever reason that no one seems to know about. Next year will undoubtedly have a a few main event spots opening which is a great time to elevate new talent. Trouble is lets hope it doesn't turn into 2003 where all the big talents left at the same time.

This is why the over-reliance on the main eventers ultimately comes back to bite every wrestling company in the ass. Seems Vince has learned nothing from the early 90's

It'll be interesting to see a change in the main event, if that's where we're headed. It just sucks that it takes the old standbys getting hurt for WWE to actually take risks. If this were the Attitude era, they would have taken the ball and run with guys like MVP, CM Punk, and Mr. Kennedy the minute they started getting the kind of reactions they'd been getting. Either way, this ought to be an intriguing transition period. I generally find that WWE in the summer always has a tinge of the unpredictable, at least in recent years. I want to see what they do with the necessity presented to them. Hopefully they push the young guys and don't just beg one of their injured stars to come back sooner or put off taking time off.

When you push a lot of new guys at once, not all of them are going to make it. In fact, I'd say about 10-15% of "promising" midcarders actually get into the top level.

I think they are ready to accept Punk, but someone like Kofi Kingston is nowhere near ready for that position. It will be very interesting to see who steps up. I'm not saying to make all of them main eventers. But they need to make as many young wrestlers as they possibly can, credible to be called up to the main event. Instead of doing Triple H vs Orton or Edge vs Cena Part 89324892, they can toss in a mid carder once in a while and let them challenge for the title instead of being cannon fodder when they're against a main eventer on RAW. Take Jack Swagger for instance. Even though he lost to John Cena not too long ago on RAW, there's no doubt the rub he got at the Draft show was worth it. His matches with the likes of Christian and Finlay have been helping him to become yet more over. He hasn't been around that long and I'm not a huge fan of him, but they're taking him seriously and he's making the best of it. Will he be main eventing RAW or Smackdown in a year or so? I wouldn't be shocked if he was. CM Punk himself is an example. Early on when the crowd was reacting with him well, they mingled him with DX and Cena on a few occasions and the results were pretty good. While he's been up and down push-wise since he cashed in his last MITB on Edge, he's now presently hovering about the main event and the crowd is definitely behind him (and his wrestling abilities, being rather solid, are augmenting this). I think they're doing the same thing with John Morrison now by having him feud with Jericho. Morrison is getting a positive, notable reaction now, his mic skills have improved vastly from what they were, and he wrestles a smoother style. And they're putting him with Jericho, a HUGELY over heel who could be in the very main event right now. Will he catapult into superstardom? Only time will tell. But I've been saying since I got here that he has the potential to make it happen.

A lot are getting older in years.
When you think about how old the following supertars will be at the end of the year
Jericho - 39 HHH - 40 HBK - 44 Batista - 40 Undertaker 44 Big Show - 37 Kane 42
That's a large, large chunk of their main event talent with either one foot in the grave or both feel slippin' as far as their in-ring career is concerned.
