I watched an episode of American Dad! last night where Stan kept getting duped into buying new car after new car, ending up with about 7 or 8 cars.
Believing that he was a failure as a man, he ran away from his family, leaving them on a one-way ticket to the poorhouse. Eventually, they found Stan and they all confronted the salesman, who upon seeing the state of the Smith family, agreed to help out the car payments.
Then Stan revealed it was all a scam.
Abandoning his family with no money.
Forcing Francine into a humiliating maid's job.
Costing Steve his best chance at scoring.
Even forcing Hayley into prostitution.
All to save 10 f***ING BUCKS A MONTH on car payments.
And he never even let the rest of the family in on the scam. They never knew.
*deep breath*
Usually I don't let things get to me. People may know me as one of the more placid and calm wrestling fans out there, and I'm not the kind to be ranting and raving.
But I believe Stan Smith needs to die for what he put his family through.
Before you start, I'm aware that it's a cartoon, and that he probably won't ever die (at least until the show is cancelled some day) and that getting any kind of help with car payments in this economy is a good thing. But I found this particular thing to be almost akin to animal cruelty. If this kind of thing happened in real life, surely Francine would have just beaten the holy shit out of him with the first object she found.
*end rant*

But that's what tears me up about the McFarlane shows, as much as I like them... the main characters never seem to get what they deserve for the way they treat their families.

He's a little self centered, maybe, but he'll generally learn his lesson. (after all other possible options have been eliminated)

There are basically two Family Guys, Pre-cancellation and Post-cancellation. Pre-cancellation was one of the more witty shows ever created and never ceases to entertain, Post-cancellation, however, is nothing but cut away jokes and Brian became a soap box for Seth to voice his agenda.

It seems that American Dad, is non-canon, as in very few things they mention actually happen in the realm of their reality. That seemed like an episode dedicated to making Smith a jerk. Then again, it seems like Seth is dedicated to making anyone who isn't following his life's mantra out to be ill-informed idiots. I mean, come on, they made an entire EPISODE dedicated to Bush being stupid drunkard, all to justify it as a "feel good" episode. They didn't even do that for Family Guy!

They didn't have the time to do one between their "Why Christianity is wrong", and "Why Pot should be legal" episodes.

They did, however, have an entire episode set to the tune of "legalize it." That's McFarline to a "T". Trust me, from the "religious people are stupid" aspect (I could argue that one to no end), to his legalization episode of Family Guy (I've seen what a lifetime of pot can do, and trust me, it is NOT harmless, but that's neither a topic I chose to get into, nor a topic that's board legal, I'd imagine), to his holier-than-though thoughts on how one candidate would have made conditions perfect as opposed to the guy who was actually elected (I was pretty angered by it, as it was HARDLY a knowledgeable opinion as much as an opinionated agenda, but I digress). Don't get me wrong, whenever they just tell a story, or make little throw away jokes ("Clearly you forgot your indoor voice", and typical "dad jokes"), American Dad is one of my favorite shows on television. It just sucks when it becomes a daily article in the Op-Ed section of an opinionated newspaper... It seems that American Dad, is non-canon, as in very few things they mention actually happen in the realm of their reality. That seemed like an episode dedicated to making Smith a jerk. Wait, you said Family Guy twice. Are you bipolar? There are basically two Family Guys, Pre-cancellation and Post-cancellation. Pre-cancellation was one of the more witty shows ever created and never ceases to entertain, Post-cancellation, however, is nothing but cut away jokes and Brian became a soap box for Seth to voice his agenda. IMO before cancellation it was a case of having limits set by Fox and pushing said limits as far as you could go. For instance very rarely was there something bleeped out. Once in a while someone would drop an F-Bomb but it was rare and when they did it was usually pretty funny and unexpected. Since they returned though they could get away with about anything so they write it like this. It may get edited out but they know it will be on DVDs and often may even be on Adult Swim. For instance someone dropping an F-bomb is the normal and not nearly as funny.

Everyone has beliefs about this and that, and they do seep into all aspects of their lives, but Seth's problem is that his show is transformed from a show into a vehicle for him to promote what he thinks. Most shows do this to some extent, but not to the level he does. You think pot should be legal? Fine, slap a stray reference or a joke in there if you feel you must. What does he do? He generates a storyline that shows what he thinks in the most positive light and obscures it with gags.

Completely agreed. I had to give up on the new Family Guy episodes awhile ago.
