Over 20 years ago my Nan loved wrestling and was really into it. She seemed to buy at least some of it as real. I still remember word for word what she had to say about heel referee Danny Davis....this was all said in between drags of her cigarette while breathing with oxygen tubes up her nose:
"Do you know what a maggot is? A maggot is the lowest form of life on this earth. And that Danny Davis could walk under a maggot and not even scratch his stomach."
Ahhh fuzzy memories....

I watched Royal Rumble 95 at my grandparents. My grandfather watched the actual Rumble match with me, mostly in total silence. He did laugh at McMahon's joke
Lawler: I'm taking her (Burger King) out to dinner tonight at a nice restaraunt. Vince: I know the nice restaraunt you're taking her. Burger King.
Even my grandpa didn't quite get it, meaning he didn't realize it was something of a nickname for Lawler in those days, he found it funny.
After HBK won, he said "Phonier than a four dollar bill." and walked off.
My other set of grandparents used to watch wrestling and actually got me into it.
I was watching Smackdown at their house once and it was during the Al Wilson storyline. I forget what was happening, but I was starting to get a little uncomfortable watching it with them. However, they were laughing and cheering and really seemed to enjoy it. That's when it occured to me, all they do is watch soap operas all day long, they are used to this kind of filth.
I also watched the Smackdown is Eddie Tribute Show there, they seemd awful confused as to what was happenng. I had to explain more than once Eddie had actually passed away and this was a tribute to him. Showing one of his old matches (or maybe a Chavo match, I don't recall), they also grew mighty confued when Eddie acted like he was hit with a chair, when no one was around. His old cheat to win.

My grandfather and I still watch wrestling whenever I'm in town.
We talk about it from both sides of things, as both marks and smart marks (i.e. we know it's "predetirmined", but we know the show takes a hell of a lot of athleticism regardless, we never call it fake though sometimes we will question storylines, my grandfather often says "That'll sell a lot of tickets!" when something big happens in a storyline or a big beatdown occurs).
He likes Ric Flair but hated the antics of Evolution, especially Triple H's constant DQ wins back in the day.
He and my mom used to watch Flair, Ted DiBiase, Ricky Steamboat, Andre the Giant, and some other golden age names I'm forgetting.

I used to watch WCW Nitro with my Nan every saturday when I was 8. The only person's name she ever remembered was Ric Flair. She used to call him Blair the fairy though, but would always ask when he was going to be on next.
The only reason I orded Wrestlemania this year was to watch Flair vs Michaels with her. Instead of sitting on the couch or anything like I usually would, I sat on the floor, next to her chair, like I used to when I was younger. I don't know why, just instinctive. The entire match I stayed silent, while she rooted for Flair. When it was over, I started to get teary eyes, knowing I watched my last Flair match with her. I looked up and she had tears in her eyes too. She just looked down at me and went "At least he put up a fight."
She doesn't watch it anymore with me, usually finds something else to do, and I think that's why.

my popa don used to love wrestling and would go to shows with his dad waaay back in the day. mom tells me stories how she would watch wrestling with popa and he would always cheer for gorgeous george because he liked watching him get his ass kicked.
when i started to get into it, he wouldn't watch it, but would sit and talk with me about it. he kept up with it through me and my bros. he didn't watch because it was "on too late".
mick foley's Have A Nice Day was the last book he read before he passed away.

I had to take care of my wifes Grandpa last summer while she went dress shopping with her mom, grandma and aunt. I threw on Disc 2 of the Bret Hart DVD and he was really into it from start to finish....

my gran watched WWF Heat around 99/00 and said it was 'ridicoulous' and 'vulgar'. and she hates The rock for doing the peoples eyebrow in a 'smug' way, which she then tried to imitate but ended up winking (bless!)
My grandad (this isnt her husband but on my dads side) said he loved Big daddy, Mick McManus etc and keeps saying how he saw them in our home town, and soem times goes to our local Working Mans club when they have charity wrestling events with people like Eugene and british indy guys. But he hates WWE. i quote (in Geordie accent) "Whyyyyyyyyyyyyy-ayyyyye! He's hardly touchin em!"
funny lol

Uhm, mine's not funny in any way... When I used to really watch wrestling, I found it was a good way for my dad and I to connect. I mean, we tended to look at the serious side of wrestling. Even recently when Eddie died, I found my father's embrace to be the most comfortable during the tragic time. Maybe it was stupid, I don't know....I mean, I guess it is childish. And wrestling might not be real...But when I was going through a rough time and I couldn't communicate about anything at all, my father and I could still talk about wrestling. Now that - that was real. Ok, that was just a touch dramatic. Here's a picture of Don West, to lighten things up!
