I was just watching SummerSlam 1994 and thinking back to around that time.
After WrestleMania X, Shawn Michaels did not really wrestle for a decent period of time. He mainly acted as Diesel's manager, and would do commentary, and his Heartbreak Hotel segment from time to time.
The night before SummerSlam, he and Diesel win the Tag Team titles. Even after that, Michaels didn't wrestle a whole lot. They had occasional title defenses. If you watch Survivor Series 1994, I don't think Michaels ever officially gets into their match.
It seems like he really didn't do much in-ring wise from after WrestleMania X until the 1995 Royal Rumble. Was there a reason for this? Was he hurt or something, or were they just trying to change his role in the company? I never really understood it.

I want to say he broke his hand but I may be thinking of a different year.

I think he was suffering from a slight injury after the ladder match but nothing too serious to stop him competing I dont think. I always believed it was just a way initially to help him get Diesel over as a force. Having Diesel go after Razor and the IC title with Shawn in his corner keep this going along. Think him not being involved a Great deal in the Survivor Series Match wasnt a big issue cause the pay-off was always going to be a Superkick to Diesel completing the Break-Up

Come on Stryker.....fight it.....fight it.....FIGHT.....IT.......
IT'S......TOO........HARD..........
CAN'T......HOLD.....IT......IN......
Shawn didn't wrestle because his close proximity to Nash caused all the talent to be sucked out of the arena into a black hole. The result was Nash wrestling instead of Shawn.
FOR I AM STRYKER! BOO NASH! (Just to keep Square happy)

Hall/Nash talk on their shoot about being upset over hearing that HBK got more money for just being on the apron at Survivor Series than they did for working the match.
As for why, I dunno, he did work matches including a rematch against Razor Ramon on Raw prior to Summerslam 94.

I always figured it was just an attempt to try to get Diesel over, but the guy could have probably needed some time off.

HBK said in his book that the reason why he didn't wrestle much in 1994 was because he was taking notes apparently from the Roddy Piper school of wrestling: his talkshow was able to keep stirring the pot in storylines while it made HBK's in-ring appearances feel special. I don't know much about any injuries he may have had, but that is the assumption I'm under.

Could he have been an ego-maniac back then and not wanting to perform so often because he was like Hogan, a special attraction that you use only once in a blue moon? I wonder that because Bret said in his book that HBK seemed nice UP UNTIL he won the title, but i figured it's a possibility.
