...he'll surpass Bryan Danielson and become the second longest reigning ROH World Champion in history. Danielson held the belt for 462 days, at Final Battle McGuinness will have held it for 447 days, and ROH's next show is 20 days after that, making it 467 before his next potential defense

And then it's on to Joe.

If they build well enough to the babyface that eventually beats him, then the longer the title run, the bigger the pop.

What's the defense number? Isn't Nigel still 5 or 6 defenses behind Danielson?

Also, as if ROH hasn't mentioned it enough, Nigel will become the only man to hold the ROH World title (or any title in ROH) from January 1 to December 31 of any calendar year.

Quite frankly, I've warmed up to the idea of him going into '09 as the champ. Sure, it took a FULL YEAR for it to happen, but there it is.

What do you mean if he retains? He's holding the belt until the Chicago PPV at least and probably past that IMO.

I didn't even notice. No offense to Nigel, but I don't feel too much excitement for this reign on top.

I'll be at Final Battle pulling for Marufuji...but there's definitely a part of me that wants to see Nigel retain.

Fuji is one of my favorites so I'm definitely rooting for him to win. I also don't believe that Nigel should be the one that bests Dragon. Dragon had the best consistent truely every match was awesome reign. Nigel hasn't had that.

It'll be interesting to see what Pearce and Co. do with Nigel's reign if he surpasses Danielson after this weekend. I mean, I doubt they'd have him surpass Joe, but, then again, I didn't think he'd surpass Danielson, either.

At this point I'm fine with whoever dethrones Nigel. I didn't like this reign much at first, then I grew to love it, but now ... now I'm just so done with it. On and on and on, and not in an enjoyable way for me either.
Just end it.

Somebody needs to make a Joe-A-Meter tracking Nigel's race to Joe's record.

i don't get the whole calender year thing. if joe had it for 21 months, then 12 months in there is jan-dec Joe lost his belt before the end of 2004. A full calendar year means to hold it from January 1 through December 31, and retain the whole way. Joe and Dragon have never done that, as they both dropped their titles at Final Battle.

What's the defense number? Isn't Nigel still 5 or 6 defenses behind Danielson? Currently 7(Nigel's defended it 31 times, Dragon defended it 38)

I think Marufuji's winning the title. I think I'm the only person who really thinks that. Just checked on the ROH Pick'ems and no one has picked Marufuji to win the title. Here's what I'm thinking.
First, the curse. The curse of the even year Final Battle. 2004 Final Battle, Aries beats Joe for the title. 2006 Final Battle, Homicide beats Danielson for the title. Both guys were going for being champ for the full calendar year. Same thing with Nigel here.
Second, how crazy would a Marufuji title reign be? With all the rumors about cost-cutting and such, people would honestly expect him to lose the title in his next defense. It would be like the Summer of Punk. It would spark interest back into ROH which is sorely needed. Plus Marufuji can have a four-star match with a broomstick so every title defense would be great no matter who he faces (Marufuji/Tyler, Marufuji/Roderick, Marufuji/McGuiness the rematch, Marufufi/Lynn, etc). Sure he won't be a champ for long and I'd be surprised if he made it pass Houston as champ, but it would be fun and it would give Tyler Black a great guy to win the title from since he's groomed to be the next champ no doubt.
