or www.youtube.com/watch?v=qNrxjqsvuJQGerard Gordeau vs Teila Tuli is the answer to a trivia question. In November 1993, these two were the first Quarterfinal in the "Ultimate Fighting Challenge" as announcer Bill Wallace kept calling it. There was no such thing as a ref stoppage, but that's basically what happened here. For reference, no fight went longer then 5 minutes and the entire pay per view was over in 90 minutes.

I loved the old UFCs for the amazing color commentary shown by Jim Brown.
Just amazing color commentary in the last 20 seconds of that clip by Jim.

for modern ufc i would completly agree with you, but in the case of this tournament i would have to say no. the rules were 1. no biting 2. no eye gouging 3. no time limits 4. no referee stoppages though no one likes to lose a tooth, he very well could have continued (and he wanted to) no doubt gordeau would have continued kicking him till tuli's corner threw in the towel anyways. but fact is, the ref didnt have the power too stop any fight, but took matters into his own hands anyways. the tournament was a big farce thanks to him. yep, the ref for that tournament was completly incompetent. i think they found him on the street and didnt tell him the rules. Yes they could have gone until Gerard stood over him execution stlye, gave a thumbs down, and snapped his neck, but the fact that Tuli kinda just rolled onto his back like a turtle after being kicked in the face made the stoppage a bit justifed.
Fight was over, good stoppage.
