What the hell have they done to Santino's character? I used to look forward to seeing him; now, I just turn the channel. Before Wrestlemania 25, the man was awesome. He was hilarious. He did little things that made you think, "That was not scripted or rehearsed. He's just adlibbing and having fun," (such as when he stole Jerry Lawler's sandwich). After the whole "Santina" fiasco, his character has steadily declined in entertainment value. Now, all he does is hang around with the guest host and recite incredibly corny, cheesy, and obviously scripted lines. It's almost like a lesser version of what happened to John Cena. The man had a great character and they slowly diluted it.

He used to get laughs because he was funny, now he gets laughs (well not really laughs. more like the occasional snicker) because he's pathetic. This guy could easily be one of their biggest stars if they let him do his thing and not give him the same kind of corny crap they give everybody else.

He still amuses me sometimes, but for the most part he is kind of annoying now.

I agree, I used to love the guy but now he serves no purpose...and I am sick of him kissing up to the guest hosts every week. They ruined him.
Hopefully his character will regain some direction in the future. It still isn't too late to repair the damage.

Santino is the "Eric Young" of the WWE - A fairly talented guy who got over due to his oddball comedy schtick and generally likable personality. After a while, however, these "initial concepts" had run their course. New ideas were quickly thrown out - the never ending feud with Bobby Roode for Eric, the "Santina"/"Vickie is a pig" thing for Santino - but none of them really stuck. In a last ditch effort to keep things afloat, the once popular worker is thrown into a situation "guaranteed" to get them back in the spotlight (Super Eric and guest host sidekick, respectively). Sadly, the push had the exact opposite effect, eventually causing fans to turn on them.
This is where the similarities end, however. The only way TNA could salvage Eric Young was to shave his head, put him in a suit, and have him act like he's the bizarre love child of Chris Jericho, LAX-era Konnan, and Raven. Santino, on the other hand, can be fixed with four little words - move him to Smackdown. That almost always seems to work anymore.

It's not unlike on "The Simpsons," when Bart became the "I didn't do it, boy." At first, it was funny because it was both unpredictable and organic. Eventually, it just became convoluted and diluted.

To quote Gunslinger, This. Co-signed Co-co-signed. He's still funny, but they just need to expand his role beyond "guest host's sidekick".

This is what WWE does. They push a new guy with whatever shtick they come up with at creative meetings. If it gets over, the credit is all theirs. If it doesn't, it's the fault of the worker. Then the 'failure' is given a bit of leeway to make something out of nothing and see if he can get over. Then, when he does, creative needs to take credit for it. So what do they do? They take over the character and, as said before in this thread, create one after another, new "I didn't do it" boys.

I would however contend that instead of their acts running their course, the problems are also due to the fact that WWE and TNA viewed the workers as solely comedy acts. If they would bill Santino as a really funny guy who could get it done in the ring (much like Chris Jericho, The Rock, Mankind, and Kurt Angle were booked in 1999-2000), he could skyrocket.

Excellent point, even though the guy has been 2 time intercontinental champion, he has never shown to be competent in the ring. Call me crazy, but I dunno... WRESTLING ONCE IN A WHILE AND ACTUALLY WINNING.... might make him a more valuable commodity.

I'm still entertained, so I have no problems whatsoever. I've got to agree. I used to come down on him a lot, but this is what they have him do, the Charlie Brown thing was one of those "laugh when you think about it...and okay, I got it, move on" things, so he's limited in general to what the writers are allowing him to do. He works with what he has been given. Don't want him going too over and overshadowing the self promoting guest hosts, RIGHT?
