Santino is the "Eric Young" of the WWE - A fairly talented guy who got over due to his oddball comedy schtick and generally likable personality. After a while, however, these "initial concepts" had run their course. New ideas were quickly thrown out - the never ending feud with Bobby Roode for Eric, the "Santina"/"Vickie is a pig" thing for Santino - but none of them really stuck. In a last ditch effort to keep things afloat, the once popular worker is thrown into a situation "guaranteed" to get them back in the spotlight (Super Eric and guest host sidekick, respectively). Sadly, the push had the exact opposite effect, eventually causing fans to turn on them. This is where the similarities end, however. The only way TNA could salvage Eric Young was to shave his head, put him in a suit, and have him act like he's the bizarre love child of Chris Jericho, LAX-era Konnan, and Raven. Santino, on the other hand, can be fixed with four little words - move him to Smackdown. That almost always seems to work anymore. Gotta disagree with the second part of your post, I'm LOVING heel Eric Young, but this isn't the place to talk about that. I just don't think the writers have a clue what to do with Santino anymore. Either that or he had a style of humour that quickly fizzles out after a while.

Yeah last night was probably the unfunniest Santino has ever been.
This guy badly needs a heel turn but it won't happen I don't think.

Never thought he was really funny, but I enjoyed the whole Beth/Santino thing when it was first starting.
I have no interest in him now, though.

I just don't think the writers have a clue what to do with Santino anymore. Either that or he had a style of humour that quickly fizzles out after a while. I don't think that's the problem at all. I think it's that the style of humor he is doing has changed. This time last year, Santino was doing what seemed to be self-thought promos (I say this because his promos resembled none of the other generic promos on the roster) with some creative freedom on the mic. He made jokes that didn't appeal to casual fans (like saying that he was going to talk to Tony Garea when he was mad about something), and seemed to have some creative freedom. Now, he's part of scripted comedy bits all pre-taped. Not really anything is done live. He also used to be a ridiculous, blundering heel. Now he's a cute babyface. The comedy didn't fizzle out, it was altered.
