The perfect example of this is Summerlsam 95: WWE Championship Diesel vs. Mabel Intercontinental Title - Ladder Match Shawn Michaels vs. Razor Ramon Bret ‘Hit Man’ Hart vs. Isaac Yankem DDS Casket Match Undertaker vs. Kama Women’s Championship Alundra Blayze vs. Bertha Faye Barry Horowitz vs. Skip Smoking Gunns vs. Jacob & Eli Blu Bob Holly vs. Hunter Hearst-Helmsley 1-2-3 Kid vs. Hakushi Outside of the ladder match, what an atrocious card. Taker, Diesel, and Hart..three of their biggest stars at the time are against three ridiculous gimmick opponents. Luger didn't even wrestle except for the run-in during the main event. I agree with most of what you said about the main event scence and the wrestlers not really touching each other. The booking was pretty bad in 1995. However I still think 1993-95 even as bad as the booking was. Was a very fin time in the WWF history. It has aged a lot better than most of the attitude era (compare a PPV from that era to a PPV of the Attitude era outside Wrestlemania 17 and you will see what I mean. Attitude Era was based more on 'shock value and shock T.V' once the shock is taken away a lot of the fun is taken out of the event). It did not make scense why Luger and Bulldog were kept of the card at Summerslam 1995 as they cou;ld have easily had there first match of the feud at the PPV 9even if it would have been short notice). There were a lot of wrestlers (including Owen Hart) kept off the card for seemingly no reason 9and Bret was back feuding with Jerry Lalwer and Issac Yankem although that match was decent). The opening match was great and first of a kind for WWF which WCW seemed to take a page out of (opening there PPVs with a 'cruiserwieght match). Hackishi VS 123 Kid was a great opening match. Also Perfect was injured at this time. Luger was left of the card after headline the PPV only two years earlier and so was Yokozunna. Lex Luger vs Bret at a PPV would have been huge but I still would had wanted Bret to go over.

I never liked Luger. I thought he sucked, honestly.
I always saw him as a poor mans Hulk Hogan, even before they attempted to push him AS Hulk Hogan...and this was as a kid when I wasn't exactly a pro wrestling critic.
The only time I liked him was his face run in WCW when the nWo was hot. He was pretty good in that role. I didn't think he was a very good heel either. I suppose with a manager he could have been a decent heel but on his own he just came off as a goof to me.

I am more referring to his WWE run and then return to WCW, so admittedly I am not a scholar on the subject. I heard he used to be great but never checked out his early work. I guess what I am trying to say is I thought he sucked in WWF and mostly sucked in WCW. As a fan at the time I didn't buy into Luger. That probably wasn't all his fault, of course.

What about his run as "The Narcissist" when he feuded before Mr. Perfect, before the whole Lex Express gayness? I thought he played that role really well.
I honestly think bookers have dropped the ball consistently with Luger his entire career?

I honestly think bookers have dropped the ball consistently with Luger his entire career? I didn't like him then. I was still a kid though, maybe I would have a different perspective now. I mean, I thought he was okay, but I just remember thinking he was playing a Mr. Perfect like role, against a face Mr. Perfect, and not doing as good of a job as Hennig did if that makes sense. I will agree that bookers dropped the ball on him. They consistently did stupid things with Luger and placed him into roles he wasn't fit for. The only time I liked Luger, as I said, was as a face against the nWo and in all my experience watching him that was probably the only time he could be considered as being booked well. Then he shortly got lost in the shuffle following that. Example: being put into the hip and cool at the time nWo Wolfpac. Luger was a horrible fit for that and just looked like a dork alongside them.

I think the "Lex Express" was a failure, he always came across as cocky and arrogant, I think he plays that role a million times better than he does a babyface. He had a lot of things working in his favor as a heel, and not much the other way around.

I honestly think bookers have dropped the ball consistently with Luger his entire career? Yes I did feel he played that role very well. I loved how they played off the feud at WM10. Was great stuff. I feel with this heel gimmick he could have gone far. No idea why WWE stopped this.

If you've seen a Luger promo, well there you go.
Not hard to figure out why he never got the gold.

That probably wasn't all his fault, of course. I really felt the same as you about Luger, for many years. I saw the lazy, immobile guy with the weak clotheslines and wondered why on earth he was considered main event. Getting the chance to catch up on some of his '87-'91 work did give me more of an appreciation of what Luger was capable of, while his role carrying the fight against the nWo in '96-'97 saw him over like rover even if his ringwork sucked. I can't forget the bad stuff in his career but, unlike before, I can say now at least that it wasn't always that way and I can see the qualities he brought to the table before he got lazy.

Lex Luger would have never have worked as 'the next Hulk Hogan'. He simply did not have the charisma or the fan appeal that Hogan did.Plus the fans were sick to death of 'American Hero angle' by this point in the WWF and the business and fans were moving in a much different direction from what they were in the 80;'s and early 90's.m Fans loved Hogan worldwide simply because he was Hulk Hogan. Not just because he was 'an American hero'. Luger was much better of as The Narcissist' than he ever was as face American hero. WWF completely dropped the ball with Luger and can;t blame him for jumping ship back to WCW. Where he was used correctly for the most part.

Did anyone even miss Luger when he left? I didnt. I think he just faded without a storyline.

I think he just faded without a storyline. If you mean him fading from WWE post-Summerslam 95, probably, I mean what was the point of the run-in?

Apparently at that point in time, it wasn't known that he was going to jump back to WCW. So concievably, Luger would have been an ally to Diesel in a war with King Mabel/Bulldog/Whoever else.

His contract had ended with the WWF at the time he was delaying signing another one and Bichoff offered him a contract to work in WCW. No one outside Bischoff and Luger knew of the contract till that night.

Just speculation but I wonder if politics played a part what with the Clique running things at the time I mean by Bishoffs own mouth he never liked Luger and was offering him less than what he was earning and only did it as a favour to Sting. I mean taking less pay and working for a guy you know doesnt like you he must have been in a bad situation to do that.

But I kinda think during the run-in when Nash struck Luger thinking he was Bulldog, that there could have been tension between the two afterward, and that could have been supposedly where Diesel becomes tweener, before his loss to Bret in Survivor Series.
