Honestly, I would say yes. When it comes to dangerous, crazy spots, he not only invented most of that which we see today, but can still do them pretty well.
However, I would never accuse him of being a good wrestler, in almost any sense. Botches aside, all of his matches always seem like bad improv to me: A lot of stuttering with very little pay-off. Also, despite all of his high spots, I just never found him interesting after a while. Too much is more than enough.

No.
Because he has a wealth of detractors. Easily just as many as he has fans. And they're ready and willing to point out his flaws. And, on the flip side, many of his fans (like me) readily acknowledge he's far from perfect. (Not all, but still quite a few.)
So overrated? No. He's also not underrated, either. I think, like Curt, he's perceived exactly where he should be. (Which is probably a few notched below Curt, honestly.)

Definitely not.
All I hear is about how this guy is a botch machine and a spot monkey...but he was also in some of the most incredible matches I've ever seen.

I'd say he is rated where he should, no one would ever say he was a great wrestler, but he's put on some of the craziest matches and spots in wrestling.

It's difficult to say someone is overated when the majority of the people I hear comment on him talk about awful he is, how he's a walking botchfest and a spot wrestler strictly.
He is what he is, he was innovative for his time, his style helped bring a lot of viewers to ECW to see somebody do moves they just werent used to, and his spotty style was a good predecessor to the "extreme" style of tables, laddders and chairs they we've seen over the past decade plus

I'm not sure if he's overrated as there's a lot of people who point out his flaws, but I don't like him. In every match I've seen of his, he botches at least a couple of moves and hurts himself quite badly in the process. His formula in a match is simply Set up move, High spot, Set up move, High spot, Set up move, High spot and it bores the crap out of me. I agree that he is innovative and I used to find some of his big moves pretty awesome, but once you've seen one Sabu match you've seen them all.

I'll echo the main sentiment in the thread..no; because people judge him flaws and all and if anything remember the botches moreso than the great matches he had.

Personally, just based on what I've personally seen, I think Sabu actually gets more hate than he should.

Allow me to say that, although I personally think he's overrated, I will say that he's been in some pretty good matches. RVD + Sabu vs. Jinsei Shinzaki and Hayabusa? Great. Taz vs. Sabu? Very good. I may not care for him much, but I'll give him his due.

I'd say he's closer to underrated than overrated. People forget that he COULD wrestle well if he wanted to, just that his darevdevil crazy style drew better. And with the endless botching/sloppy/repetitive/spot monkey comments I see directed at him, it seems he nearly never gets any credit.

Overrated? No, not at all. Underrated? Yes, to some extent.
People focus on what he does wrong more than they give him credit for what he did right. He may have his detractors, but the mark he has left on wrestling can't be denied.

He crafted a unique persona and is a daredevil that created some truly unique spots. What's his "rating" supposed to be anyways? He entertains, what more do you need from him?

I think people have a pretty good view about him. Very innovative but sloppy. Someone who works his own style and doesn't adapt to others. He does dangerous things but he is the one taking the bumps which makes him a 'safe' wrestler to work with. Sabu won't easily injure his opponent, he'll crack his own ribs and break a shin or two but he won't injure his opponent.
He is a spot monkey but those spots are awesome. He has been one of the most important wrestlers in ECW but also a wrestler that was never able to fit anywhere else.
He has had his best days but those best days can't easily been forgotten.

Yes over-rated fits him. He hit big spots that look good on tape, but watch him live and he misses 3 in 5
