Savage's feud with DDP as a result of joing the NWO rejuvenated him and as a result, imo, we got the best in ring performances Randy had given for quite awhile. Indeed he was comfortably the best WCW main event wrestler in the over 40 club at the time until he got injured in mid-98.

Starrcade 95 was shown on a Wednesday I believe. I'm watching 24/7 and they are replaying the shows from 95 and they kept mentioning Starrcade being shown mid-week or something.
Anyway, I believe it did prolong his career. I was watching Nitro, the 2/2/98 show the other night and the show did revolve around Savage and all I kept thinking was, wow its 1998 and this guy has had a very good career. Started in WWF in 85, was champion what...three times...probably made huge money. Jumped to WCW, where he no doubt got paid, got an endorsement deal with Slim Jim. Joined the NWO and that probably made him more money. Left on his own terms. Yeah, it prolonged his career and he greatly benefited from it. The guy was in the business for for probably 20 years or so, and the majority of that was spent in two companies where he was there during their peak.

If I can remember what the Torch was reporting around that time, Savage was being offered a nice chunk of change to go back to the then-WWF around that time he joined the nWo. The big selling point was the possibility of a feud with the champion, Shawn Michaels. Also, fresh feuds would be in place.
I'm sure WCW countered, which is why Randy went to the nWo in the first place.

I feel it would have been so special to see him work with the likes of Bret & HBK.

I thought it was pretty shocking when it happened. Not mega shocking, bit fairly shocking.
I think I remember afterwards, it was said that Eric Bischoff would only let him back, if he joined the NWO. I guess he was suspended or something in a storyline, but don't remember why.

The '99 stuff was pretty sad though.
The Macho Man looked like an inflatable and hanging around with girls half his age always looked kinda desperate. It didn't feel right without Lizbet at his side.

The Starrcade 95 main event between Flair and Savage was not a scheduled main event. Flair earned the title shot earlier in the evening. To make matters worse for that event, fans knew that Sting/Luger/Savage wouldn't be in top shape for the main event because they would scheduled to fight twice that night due to the Bragging Rights feud between NJPW and WCW.
With the exception of Savage/Luger/Sting/Flair, the only wrestlers from WCW on that show were Benoit/Guerrero/Johnny B Badd/Alex Wright. At that time, none of those 4 wrestlers were draws for WCW (Benoit & Guerrero were relatively new to the company).
I was a WCW fan at the time and had no desire to order this show.

Plus the NJPW 'invasion' stuff had a really lousy build from what I can see. They were barely on Nitro and it wasn't talked about much, none of the NJPW guys got much in the way of hype or promotion.
