And the CIF season is complete. In what is to be remembered as a shitshow of a season, the Salina Liberty d. the Omaha Beef in a rematch of last year's Champions Bowl, 38-34, to win their first league championship. *Kicked out a team due to their failed payments over a high school team winning a contest the previous season. *Several of their teams lost to semi-pro (read: unpaid) exhibition teams during the season. *Sioux City tries to raffle an AR-15 during a game. *Billings' ownership changes hands in messy terms. *Several team owners and staff misbehave on social media (notably Southwest Kansas if we were to ignore the Sioux City gun debacle) as well as on the field (Salina vs. Omaha in particular was infamous during the regular season). Yeah, I'd say it was insane. Don't forget the Commissioner causing the officiating crew to resign in Dodge City after his bullshit.

Heading into the last week of the NAL season the Albany Empire are in first place. Due to the unbalanced schedule they hold a win percentage advantage over the Carolina Cobras. The four-team playoff is set, and seeding will be determined this weekend. The Empire (7-4) host the San Antonio Gunslingers (4-7). The second-place Cobras (8-5) finish out on the road agains the other 14 team playing 14 regular season games, the 7-6 Jacksonville Sharks. The last playoff team, the 6-5 Columbus Lions, host the last-place Orlando Predators (3-8) in their season finale.

And the 2022 Dollar Loan Center GoforBroke.com Indoor Football League National Championship is set.
Quad City represents the East, after downing the 14-2 and top ranked Frisco Fighters, 48-41, in Frisco on Friday.
Then Northern Arizona, a team that was 1-13 last season, goes into Phoenix, comes back from down 14, and beats the Arizona Rattlers, 52-51, to win the West.
The Quad City Steamwheelers look to earn their first championship in the IFL, and first since the original Steamwheelers won back to back titles in 2000-2001 in the af2.
And the Northern Arizona Wranglers, an expansion team last year that went 1-13, turns it around their second season, goes 12-4 in the regular season, and now are looking for a title.

So, we're only a few days away from the Dollar Loan Center Goforbroke.com Indoor Football League National Championship. I thought I'd give my thoughts on every team's season.
Two things: 1. These are my opinions alone. 2. I'm doing this in the style of UrinatingTree.
Bay Area Panthers - I mean, expectations were low on them coming into the season, but Sweet Zombie Jesus. You win the first game of the season, and then lose FIFTEEN STRAIGHT. There is being a LOLCow, and being beyond a LOLCow. This is the latter. The team they beat came back and curbstomped them later in the season!! If I were Marshawn Lynch, I'd be asking the other owner what the hell is this, and ask for a refund.
Bismarck Bucks - This team had good things going for it. They went 3-2 in the first five games (granted all three weres were against teams under .500, one being the prior trainwreck). Then the train came off the rails, and they proceed to lose 11 straight games. 4 of those games were by 5 points or less, but a loss is a loss. This team was mid in the CIF, and it's even worse in the IFL. This is a team I want to succeed, but there's nothing to really show.
San Diego Strike Force - When the owner sells the team right before the season, you know it's a bad omen. Roy Choi, the initial owner, who also owned the Bay Area Panthers and Cedar Rapids River Kings (before killing Cedar Rapids) sold to a local investment group who wanted to keep the team alive, as Choi "no longer wanted to be owner." Another bad omen is the fact that TWO genaral managers left the team during the hiatus of Covid-19. It's been said before, and I'll say it again. F*** YOU, SPANOS.
Vegas Knight Hawks - Honestly, I had no clue on how to gauge this team. I know the ownership is complete trash in one CHUCK BRENNAN. The same Chuck Brennan that closed up everything he owned in South Dakota because the state wouldn't allow him to make a crap ton of money off of predatory payday loans. The team is also part owned by Bill Foley, who is part of the ownership group of the NHL Vegas Golden Knights. Which is also a bad omen, giving how the Knights are falling off the rails. The team looked to be on the verge of being decent, despite starting 4-5. Then they proceeded to lose 5 of their last 7 games, missing the playoffs entirely. But it's not all bad for them, since the IFL decided to have Vegas host the renamed IFL Championship game. For 3 years. If you go back and look at the AFL's decision to have a neutral site game, it marked the downfall of a league.
Green Bay Blizzard - I can't be too rough on this team. The Blizzard have a decent coach in Corey Roberson, who brought the Blizzard back to the playoffs in 2019 after 6 years of being a doormat. The last two seasons have been rough, win-wise. Three of their first four losses were by 3 points or less. Something goes a little different in those three games, they could be 9-7 and in a fight for the playoffs. I think if Roberson cleans up the mistakes they made during the season, they could be a playoff contender next season again.
Duke City Gladiators - I can't say I'm not too surprised about this. I mean, Duke City was just minutes away from causing chaos in the 2021 IFL Season and upsetting the Rattlers for a shot at the United Bowl Championship. But the thing is, they were a .500 team last year, and then a .500 team this year. This year, reality just caught up with them. The two-time CIF Champions met the harsh reality when it comes to the IFL that you have to go through Arizona. And this year, the Rattlers decided not to make this close, and curbstomped them out of the playoffs. Still, not all terrible, considering the team started out as a replacement team in the CIF.
Sioux Falls Storm - Seriously, what the hell was this season? Did you not learn ANYTHING from last year? It's like nobody cared. The players, the coaches, you name it. This team didn't play a full game the ENTIRE SEASON. There were games they barely snuck by that they should've kicked the crap out of. There were games that they had a commanding lead, only to either piss it away, or nearly piss it away. They lost to Green Bay for the first time EVER this season. They lost to Quad City a month after BEATING THEM. Two games they lost to a last second field goal, one of which was the Green Bay game. They pulled an Atlanta in the last game of the season, up 28-7 with barely over a minute left in the first half, only to piss it away, along with their playoff hopes. They went through THREE quarterbacks in the season, one that shouldn't have seen a STARTING JOB. There's a glaring issue in the culture of the Storm. The cracks started showing in 2017, and now, those cracks are gaping holes. If you want to see how an Empire falls, this is the perfect example. From 10 straight trips to the United Bowl, winning 7, to barely making/missing the playoffs. There's only one resolution: BLOW IT ALL UP.
Tucson Sugar Skulls - The pet project of Kevin Guy. Let's not "sugarcoat" it (see what I did there?). The Sugar Skulls have just been.....well, there. They haven't really made a splash in the league, except for one instance, upsetting the Arizona Rattlers at home this year. People thought this team would turn around when Dixie Wooten was hired to the be the coach/GM, but it really hasn't gone anywhere. Sure, they made the playoffs, but let's be honest. If you didn't make the playoffs with that Western Conference, it would've been pathetic. The Sugar Skulls have a lot of talent, but things will need to be changed if they want to "sweeten" their fans' taste. Alright, I'll stop with the sugar puns.
Iowa Barnstormers - Iowa was another odd case. They had instances where they showed the makings of a really good team. Then there were times that they lost games or barely won games that really made no sense. They had four games where they lost by 8 points or less, so that is a tough pill to swallow. Then they lose their last game of the regular season, and have to hope Frisco wins in order to survive. And what do they get for a reward? Going down to Frisco and getting the piss taken. This team is a far cry from the 2017-2019 teams, which were Championship contenders, and I feel changes would need to be made in order to get back to that level.
Massachusetts Pirates - This team made no sense this season. The defending IFL Champs would have games where they tar and feather their opponents, and then proceed to have games where they barely won, or lost to an opponent that made you scratch your head in confusion. In a rematch of last year's United Bowl, they got curbstomped by the Rattlers. For defending champions, that is a major issue, and one that should be resolved. However, it didn't resolve itself, and they proceeded to lose to Quad City in overtime at home in the playoffs. Drink up, me hearties.
Arizona Rattlers - The Curse of the IFL/CIF Lawsuit of 2017 continues. Since that fall of 2017, right after winning the United Bowl, Arizona has had their season end at home 4 straight seasons. 2 of them were in the United Bowl. And you know what? They deserve it. It's true, they have amazing talent, some of the best in the league. The Coaching is also high talented, but there's always a fatal flaw when it comes to ending games. And what do the Rattlers and their fanbase do? They BITCH AND WHINE AND MOAN AND BLAME EVERYTHING BUT THEMSELVES!! Jesus, there's less salt in the DEAD SEA than there is in Phoenix, Arizona! Until they learn to grow some accountability and common sense, I hope the Rattlers never win another championship. It would be delicious karma. What's even more ironic is that they also blew a two score lead to their opponents in the Western Conference Championship.
Frisco Fighters - The classic case of YOU BLEW IT. Frisco was looking like the top dog. The best of the best. The Big Cheese. Billy Back had this team hitting on all cylinders, winning 9 straight to end the regular season, even crushing the hopes of Sioux Falls after being down 28-7. Then, they hit a road block. A road block named Quad City. Frisco had defeated QC handily early in the season, but was taken to overtime in the second meeting in the regular season, barely surviving that one. Their luck ran out in the playoffs. Still, the Fighters showed that they are one of the best teams in the league, replacing one championship caliber coach in Clint Dolezel with another championship caliber coach in Billy Back. I could see them in this spot next season. Maybe it will be the moment where they get over the hump.
And now we're to the moment. 14 teams started this journey to a championship. Now we're down to two.
Quad City Steamwheelers - At the beginning of the season, I did not think we'd be uttering the words "Quad City Steamwheelers: EASTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS." They started the year losing 3 of the first 5 games, going 4-4 at the halfway point. They had a string of good wins, before being absolutely Master Blasted by the Green Bay Blizzard. At that point, I think a lot of people, myself included, were writing this team off. But they stayed in the race. Even when the league kept screwing up the tiebreaker scenarios at the end of the season, thus pissing of the entire Quad City fanbase. Salty fans aside, the Steamwheelers kept chugging along. They won against Iowa when it mattered. They went to Massachusetts and shocked the Pirates in overtime. They came back against Frisco being down by 14+ points THREE TIMES, winning the Conference Championship after an abnormality of officiating (Fumble, then Incomplete Pass, then Fumble again after multiple reviews).
Northern Arizona Wranglers - This is the biggest shock of them all. The Wranglers last year were in last, 1-13, not withstanding the LOLCow that was the Louisville Xtreme. Then, they broughtin former Iowa coach Les Moss, who basically rebuilt the team into a powerhouse. The team went 13-3 and were one of 3 teams to beat the Juggernaut Salt Mine that is the Arizona Rattlers. So after seeing these results, I'm starting to think that Les Moss wasn't the issue at Iowa last year. Especially with his successful record as head coach of the Jacksonville Sharks. Hell, I had them ranked last in my initial JSRF Indoor Rankings to start the season. Then, they went on a tear, almost as if to say F*** YOU to me. And I ate that humble pie, because after that first game, which was a 22-9 loss, they gelled together, and walked into the Salt Mines of Phoenix to take down Arizona and win the Western Conference. Good on you, boys.
ULTIMATE UNITED BOWL JINXING - Yes I know the IFL changed the name of the United Bowl. f*** them, I'm still calling it that. This is actually the first time in a few years where I will be happy with either team winning it. At least it was until the Steamwheeler fanbase became SALTY AS F*** after their coach not getting Coach of the Year. The Steamwheelers look to win their first title since returning, and the first since the original Steamwheelers won back to back af2 championships in 2000 & 2001. But I think the Wranglers are too much, and they will complete the ultimate WORST to FIRST storyline. NAZ 56 QC 41

For the second consecutive year, Albany will host the NAL Championship game when the home Empire face the Carolina Cobras for the title. Albany looks to win back-to-back NAL titles and make it 3 league titles in a row as they were the last AFL champions. The Cobras make their third NAL championship appearance and are the 2018 league champs.
The Empire (9-4) advanced in a nail-biter over the Jacksonville Sharks, 68-67. Jacksonville, down 9, scored and converted a 2-point try as time expired to make the score within 1.
The Cobras (10-5) defeats the Columbus Lions 65-51 to move on to the title game. After falling behind 10-0 early, the Cobras slithered back to score the next 21 points and keep control for the rest of the game.
The Cobras won the 3 previous meetings this season against the Empire, with all 3 being close games.

The Albany Empire are back-to-back NAL (and 3 in a row counting AFL) champions after a 47-20 drubbing of Carolina. The Cobras scored first then Albany rattled off 47 STRAIGHT POINTS! The Cobras added a couple mercy TD’s late but the story of the game was the stifling Empire defense.
During halftime, NAL officials welcomed the West Texas Rednecks - no sorry Warbirds - who will become the 8th NAL franchise for the 2023 season.

the NAL discontinued the Columbus Lions membership back in December so the NAL are back down to 7 teams Sounds like there's financial concerns with the Lions. Of course the whole thing on Facebook went like this: Columbus: "We're leaving the NAL to look at other options." NAL: "No, we kicked you out because you have no money." Columbus: "Did not!!" NAL: "Did too!" Columbus: "Well you're breath stinks!" NAL: "Yeah, well you have a DINOSAUR HEAD!!"

Hopefully they've moved on from previous leadership and sorted out the issues with the unpaid insurance that killed the league the last time. And vet the owners and make them pay anything up front so the league and other teams won't have to bail anyone out.
