I just wanted to ask after reading "52" (Which was awesome) what's the best books to read to help build up to Final Crisis (Major ones).
I've tried reading timelines but they don't really help in explaining which are the "Major" reads.

IIRC, doesn't the Seven Soldiers: Mr. Miracle mini-series serve as an early lead to FC?

I think the first two Zatanna issues were good, and the first two Guardian issues were awesome. Apart from that, it was largely forgettable for me.

Understandable, it's one of my favorite mini-events personally. Wish Frankenstien would get used a bit more.

damn, lost my post when i checked your profile, victor, but okay, we're the same age. that will come into play later maybe if i don't forget. now, countdown (tofinal crisis) gets a lot of bad feedback because dc decided to try and replicate 52 with another weekly, year-long series, but with one main, kind of crappy, writer, whereas 52 had four of the best writers on it. it's basically the same formula of a buch of minor characters, or groups of minor characters, all in separate storylines that eventually converge. my favorite storyline was with donna troy, second robin, and kyle lantern as they explore the multiverse, lots of cool what if? scenarios and pretty much the only bits i enjoyed. it should be said that this comes in four volumes at $20 a piece, so you'd spend $80 on something you may not enjoy or least ever read again. there's also "death of the new gods" but the problem there is that the main point of final crisis was the death of the new gods, but this, and orion's death in particular, were shown to happen differently in final crisis, countdown, and death of the new gods. this is apparently because the communication between dc and the writer of final crisis about some of these plot points broke down. it seems dc took the initiative to parse out the writer's original ideas through countdown and death of the new gods (both by different writers) in order to sell more paper. but something changed and so the books were published as tie-ins but events occur at odds with the main story. I'd say all that's really vital to understand final crisis (you won't fully grasp your first time thru anyway) would be s seven soldiers particularly the mr. miracle and frankenstein stories. this is another four-volume $80 "investment" and the superman beyond tie-in to final crisis, but that comes with final crisis if you get the hardcover. so, my advice, if you are still paying for comics, you don't need to. especially if, as i said, you spend $80 on something you'll never want to read again. buy the final crisis hardover, it's worth it, as you'll read it 3 or 4 times to understand it, and then probably several more times for pleasure. but get a library card or go to one of those things online that breaks copyright things for any of the other tie-ins. Also, you're 23, thats a lot of money for things you're going to have to throw away or put in storage when your future-wife needs shoe space, just fyi.

I'm so glad I got Countdown from the liberry, and didn't actually waste money on it. Karate Kid goes out NOT fighting? Leave the memories along - the Val Armorr I grew up reading about wasn't fated to die on an operating table, he should have been left as the hero who sacrificed himself to save Orando and probably the whole Legion.
And as for big rat/dog men killing off Una? Feh.
Seven Soldiers was all kinds of clever and awesome, though.

I would say SEVEN SOLDIERS: MR. MIRACLE (it's a thematic lead-in, not necessarily a direct one)......then DC UNIVERSE #0..........then FINAL CRISIS. Avoid COUNTDOWN and DEATH OF THE NEW GODS at all costs, please. FC takes little things from them, tweaks some of those and then ignores the rest of the crap. I wasted my money on CD & DOTNG, so I would know that I'm 100% right. Wish Frankenstien would get used a bit more. He's been used a bit lately - the recent SOLOMON GRUNDY miniseries, and an issue of SUPERMAN/BATMAN that just came out this week.

I think Death of the New Gods also lead into Final Crisis.
One bit of advice, though. Be sure and stock up on Tylenol, asprin, ibuprofen, Advil, and whatever other pain relievers you can find to get through the inevitable hangover of reading the totally f***ed up ride that Grant Morrison churned out and tried to pass off as epic.

All DC 1,000,000 drops a few lead ins to Final Crisis, mainly in the Batman issues.

Even though everyone's already said it, avoid Countdown to Final Crisis like the plague.
Grant Morrison flat out admitted that he completely ignored it when he was doing Final Crisis.

Main reason why is that no one told him about it before they started. I heard that he basically gave in his basic plot points for Final Crisis to DiDio and, for some reason, it didn't get to the people making Countdown so since noone knew what was happening until the last few issues where everything is basically *ahem* 'set up' for Final Crisis.

I think Death of the New Gods also lead into Final Crisis. It was the same deal as COUNTDOWN - supposed to, but didn't. DotNG was "respectfully putting the New Gods to rest"... ....and lo, FINAL CRISIS #1 picks up in a completely different place and ends the New Gods in a much better way.
