Is this possible? I need to take a picture of something for an assignment but my laptop doesn't have a printscreen key.

Download screen-capture software. Two examples of this type of software are SnapShot, which is freeware (no cost) and SnagIt, which costs $49.95 but has a free 30-day trial, and more features than SnapShot.

On a Mac?
Click Apple+Shift+3 to capture the whole screen, and Apple+Shift+4 to use your cursor to capture any portion of your screen you like. Images will be saved to your desktop as a .pdf or .png file.

I would suggest Jing. It's a TechSmith product like SnagIt, but it's totally free and it's a wonderful little capture program. I use it at work almost everyday.

I prefer Gadwin PrintScreen myself. You can set the file type to save as, the key used to capture a screenshot, the compression ratio, whether to resize it or not, et cetera.

Not to sound all snobbish, but are you absolutely sure you don't have a print screen button? I've never ever seen a keyboard without one (unless it's a mac, which I don't know much about). Sure it's not stashed away as an Fn alternate or something?

I've always thought "Print Screen" was a bit of a misnomer anyway. Glad you found it

Oh, Print Screen was originally for text based computing, where you could hit the button, and MS-DOS would print out whatever was written there. When graphics rolled around, the function was never updated, and it would still print out text, but not pictures. So the function was broken until Windows 95 came out, when it became the Screen Capture we all know and love. In any case, it's the far most useful of the legacy keys, as I have never had a practical use for either home or help
