Sometimes I don't understand Australia.
The country has no official religion, seems very liberal when it comes to everything, yet they have no qualms about playing the moral card to ban video games.
And, this post is in no way reflective of Australia's stance on religion or politics, I was just pointing out those things to show how freeminded Australians seem to be from my point of view.

It's really kind of weird. Australia as a whole is very whatever about most thing and for the most part laidback. We do however get annoying amounts of political correctness at times. Like renaming the Fairy penguin the Little Penguin because it may offend Homosexuals. Even though the Australian homosexual community thinks something like this is stupid and pointless. To clarify it's one man playing the moral card. And because this man possesses a fair amount of political clout, he single handily c***blocks a very vocal group.

That guy and Greg Nichols need there own comic book as Super Villians.

I was reading some interviews with Atkinson, and he said that he is opposed to an R-18 rating because he is afraid that kids could play the games once an older person buys it and there's no way to prevent that from happening.
Can someone from Australia enlighten me as to their laws regarding privacy and parental rights? Because in America, that sort of governmental intrusion would never be allowed.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply that Australians en masse are employing the moral card. As you can see, I'm not very "aware" of the political atmosphere of Australia, as a matter of fact my main interactions with Aussies have come on these very boards, Myspace, and a few times in Hawaii, and they all seem as if they are an easy going lot in whole.

Four years ago, I met someone who spent most of his life living in Australia and New Zealand. When I brought up the topic of the Australian government banning video games and censoring the internet, he told me that stuff was a thing from the past - a 'phase' that had already passed and was over with. I was skeptical of his assurance, and this story makes me all the more skeptical.

Hell as much as I bitch about the price of US games, I'm thankful that I get games unedited and with the cheapest prices in the world. Games localized for North American audiences are not always 'unedited.' The violence usually stays intact, whereas sexuality is sometimes censored out (the opposite is true in Europe, which makes more sense if censorship is actually supposed to promote healthy activities and discourage harmful ones). Case in point: Compare the European version of The Getaway (PS2) or Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude (Xbox / PS2) to the North American version. An example which has nothing to do with sexuality is Maken X (Dreamcast).
