You know, I've been wondering this too. I personally don't count The Matrix. Yeah, I know it should count, and perhaps the first one does. I even liked the films, but they just don't quite have the right "feel". This is just my opinion though, they're still good movies in their own right. Probably the best cyberpunk movie (that is live action) that there has ever been is still Blade Runner. Yeah, Blade Runner is pretty damn hard to top. Seconded. Why even try. Now...a STEAMpunk movie...that I want to see...Big screen version of Penny Arcade: On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness, anyone?

I always liked Johnny Mnemonic for some reason. As for why there's not too many, I guess it's pretty much been said, "the future" came and went and it turned out to be pretty normal after all.

I'm also gonna throw out how much I would love to see a film version of "Snow Crash" one of these days.

Yeah I guess that could count. It's funny to see how many Cyberpunk movies Keanu Reeves has been in. Johnny Memonic, Matrix Trilogy, and A Scanner Darkly. The guy is like the cyberpunk poster boy.

I think we're all missing the bigger picture here.....The Matrix, In my mind ruined the mainstream on Cyberpunk.
Like it or not it was the biggest, or at least most visible, Cyberpunk movie and people are still split into those that LOVE the movies and see them as some deeply philosophical allegory, and others.....like myself, think that aside from the first one they quickly devolved into pseudo-intellectual Bullshit and tried too hard to be more mystical than needed.
But I'd say that the whole cyberpunk genre is predicated on people not only not understanding, but ultimately seeing Sufficiently advanced technology as magic or some grand thing. We're too wrapped up in what technology can do RIGHT NOW, not just in an expendable present, but a culture of immediacy in general. Until someone with real talent gets into the Speculative Fiction game, I see Cyberpunk being relegated to the same vein as "Giant Monster" and "Period Piece" where there will be few real standouts until something great comes around.
