With Trudy being a writer it just seemed off, more like she was breaking the story, not the story herself.
But dammit when he met Molly I nearly lost it. Then when they showed him in bed, one pillow I was one step closer. Finally when he wasn't wearing his normal clothes, I was done.

I have a dumb question: Why is it that so many programs' finales have those montages? I mean I get the reason, but I always its like a nice way to save money and not necessarily have to pad the whole teleplay to the regular length. See Coach. A montage is a very easy way to get emotion out of longtime fans. That stuff with Sharona from the first episodes really made me appreciate where Monk was as a character by the end, and it was also nice seeing so many familiar faces that couldn't be there for the finale.

But dammit when he met Molly I nearly lost it. Then when they showed him in bed, one pillow I was one step closer. Finally when he wasn't wearing his normal clothes, I was done. I'm not ashamed to admit that I cried. The montage and the song at the end, got me to cry. I loved the finale, and I'm sure as hell going to miss the show. It was great to see every main character get their happy ending. The only possible downside is that Randy's happy ending involved moving away, splitting up the little family they had. So for 8 great years, I say thank you to the cast and crew of Monk. A thanks also goes out to USA, for giving the show a full season to wrap everything up, and not treating it like crap. Monk is a big reason why USA is the top cable company. Without Monk, there's no guarantee we'd have Psych, Burn Notice or White Collar. Monk was the blueprint for USA's shows, just light shows that make us smile. Burn Notice is the darkest show, but even then they put a lot of light heartedness in the show. Monk was the first of USA's characters, and they treated the show right.

Yeah I may have teared up a little at the ending montage. When Monk met Molly, the tears pouring down Tony Shaloub's face reminded me just why this character was so great.
A really nice touch at the end was when he was leaving with Natalie to meet the Captain, he wasn't wearing the same suit he always wears. Like he no longer felt like a prisoner to himself. I loved him checking the stove to show he still has his quirks, but it was as if they had reverted to the way they were when Trudy was alive. Great finale (although I was a little disappointed that there wasn't one final "Here's what happened..."

So this entire convoluted (but brilliant) series was all based on a love affair? That just seems .... anticlimactic. I actually found it oddly nice that they didn't go and have some big "exposing the mob" type thing or something else. They made it something that he might otherwise solve, but being so attached to the case and his deification of her made it go for so long. If it were a story that Trudy was breaking, it just wouldn't make that much sense, since being a reporter tends to require a lot of communicating with editors and such about what you've found.
