Yes, they are pretentious. Yes, Bono preaches a lot. I couldn't care less, this is a great band that deserves the acclaim.
Usual rules of the appreciation thread apply.

I hate U2, but there are a few things I have to admit.
All That You Can't Leave Behind is one of the most perfect pop records ever made. I don't think there's a bad song on it, and it's one of only two U2 CDs that I own.
The other one is Rattle And Hum, which I enjoy for mostly being totally out of character for them. It's basically them throwing their hands in the air and saying 'what the f*** do we do now?' The result is odd by their standards, including my very favourite of their songs, 'Van Diemen's Land.'
The final thing I have to say is that 'Pride' is easily a contender for THE greatest vocal in history. The first time he says 'In the name of love' on that record... I don't even like the song, but Bono's vocal there is absolutely staggering.

I'm a huge U2 fan, own all their albums. All That You Can't Leave Behind is probably my favourite, followed by Achtung Baby. Both are pretty much flawless albums.
Seriously, I could listen to U2 for hours

As a U2 fan who saw them live for the very first time back in October, I wonder what everyone's obsession is with AYCLB.
That album is massively overrated and while it has some great songs on it, it also has some songs which are terrible by any standard.
My favorite albums of theirs are Zooropa and Pop. They're not the U2 everyone expected or wanted based on their earlier work, but those albums sum up my current state of mind very well.

My favorite band ever, ever. I'm going to see them live next July in Toronto, for the first time, and I can't wait. I'm a big time U2 collector as well; singles, old vinyl, bootlegs, posters, whatever I can get. I will defend them until my dying day, even though they (meaning Bono) make it hard sometimes.
And ATYCLB has some beautiful songs, Walk On, Kite (live it is killer), When I Look At the World, and of course Beautiful Day. My favorite album has to be Joshua Tree (hard to beat that record), but Achtung Baby and their newest, No Line on the Horizon, are close. And Pop was definitely unfinished when it was released, but by the time the Popmart Tour was over, most of those songs were vastly improved, especially Please and Mofo (watch their Mexico City Popmart DVD for evidence of this, because Mexico City was one of the last stops on Popmart).

U2 is fantastic. What was their best album, was it Joshua Tree? Amazing album. I just can't stand Bono personally. He's the Sean Penn of the music world.

And if you're in the mood to listen to some great-fairly unknown U2 songs and live recordings:
*Mods, I don't know if there are rules on the number of imbeddings in a post, if so, I'll delete some.

I love U2 and have never gotten why they get so much hate. The Edge is really underrated for all the different stuff the man can do.I have almost all of their albums except for Zooropa and Pop(none of my local stores ever have them in stock for some reason). My personal favorite is probably tied between Joshua Tree(of course) and Achtung Baby which is an amazing record("Who's Going to Ride Your Wild Horses?" is an amazing song).
Also,Boy doesn't get the love it should. It is a very solid record for such a young group(at the time).

I understand why this band has had so much flak over the years but when they have so many amazing songs (maybe more than any other band in the last 20 years) its hard to hate. Didn't like No Line On The Horizon to be honest but HTDAAB was a pretty solid album I thought.

Used to be a huge fan of theirs back when I was younger. Got a few of my cousins into their music too. "In the name of love" is probably my favorite song of theirs.

one of my favorite bands. I really wish their concert in Minneapolis next July wasn't sold out. I didn't hear about it soon enough otherwise I would have gone in a heartbeat.

I love U2 and have never gotten why they get so much hate. The Edge is really underrated for all the different stuff the man can do. Yeah, there's plenty the man CAN do, and does sometimes - but the majority of the time he just doesn't bother, stepping on his delay pedal instead.

I attended their concert in Manhattan in 1982(?) with the battleship Intrepid as their backdrop. They were touring in support of this album "War".

I'm a fan of their 80's material (except "October"), and "Achtung Baby." When it comes to textural guitar players, The Edge is probably my favorite.
