Have to say that the Super Star Wars series has to be on the list. Even on Easy the games are hard to beat

Battletoads, because the difficulty is completely unfair. Contra, for pure reaction speed and punishing failure.

Contra III, unless you want to count 'I Wanna Be The Guy' then of course that game wins

My top three are Battletoads, Contra Hard Corps for the Genesis and the entire Ghosts 'n Goblins franchise. Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts for the SNES is especially maddening. It's one of the few games I've never been able to beat.
I can't say I agree on the Super Star Wars games though. They were challenging, but never to the point of frustration.

Bucky O Hare on the NES.
Utterly unforgiving in difficulty.

I'm going with Donkey Kong 64 simply because it has absolutely zero direction to it and is boring as hell.

Probably can add the Donkey Kong Country series to the list also. They are fun but can piss you off real quick

I'll second Battletoads, and anything that has "Ninja Gaiden" in the title.

My friend had this ported on his Dreamcast back in the day.
Dude makes it look easy on that video... all of us were dying a minute in, if that. I think it's one of those games where there's an invisible maze you pretty much have to figure out. It was so crazy though, we played for over an hour jus passing the controller around.

Take your pick of the NES Mega Man games. The only one remotely challenging is #1 The yellow devil is probably harder alone than the rest of the games combined. If you don't use the game pause glitch of course.
