That volleyball game on X box made me pretty hard I think you're doing this wrong.

Contra Hard Corps for the Genesis This is one of those things I don't understand about going back and playing old games. When this game came out, my brother and I ended up beating it in damn near every way you can. Going back and trying to play it now, I can't do anything with it.

Raiders of the Lost Ark for Atari 2600.
If you haven't seen the AVGN Nerd's review (even if you're not a fan) check it out to see the mental gymnastics you have to perform to figure out how to win, and then remember this was the 80s when there weren't even any any game magazines to speak of, much less an internet. You were on your own!

Battletoads Hyper Loderunner (gameboy), I never finished a single level of that damn game, I may have to play it again now I'm older.
I've never played it but I've heard Takeshi no Chousenjou is one of the hardest games ever, it had kids ringing up the hint line crying, even with the strategy guide it was too hard and they had to release a second version. It featured things like hitting a boss 20,000 times, singing karaoke into the mic and putting the controller down for an hour.

The original Ninja Gaiden for NES is just unforgiving in its difficulty. Castlevania I and III are also up there.

Dance Dance Revolution.
It's impossible to stand on my controller and press those tiny buttons with my toes.

Contra III, unless you want to count 'I Wanna Be The Guy' then of course that game wins Nothing is worst than "I wanna be the guy". I t drove me insane when I tried it. However. the Zangief/Krang got one of the best deaths in the game. Contra III is only hard when you play at the hard difficulty. Even when you beat the Normal mode without dying, it's near impossible.

As a kid I was convinced that Mega Man 4 could not be beaten and was made that way on purpose. Like it was alive or something.
