Half and half for me. I acknowledge the quality and innovativeness of his movies, but they're not really my cup of tea. The Shining is good in its own right, but not my favorite, A Clockwork Orange was alright but didn't do much for me, and Dr. Strangelove may be one of the most criminally overrated movies ever.
This is all just my opinion, of course. But his style just doesn't appeal to me.

Kubrick is amazing, and yes, he is a great director.
My favorites would have to be Full Metal Jacket and The Shining. I feel his films grab you and bring you in, making you feel as if you are a part of it all.

He was ok, but I never found him to be all that special really. I loved The Shining and Full Metal Jacket and I would have liked to have seen his take on A.I. but overall I don't find him all that spectacular.

Any of his films I've seen have been about an hour two long IMO. I loved Full Metal Jacket and The Shining was excellent, but A Clockwork Orange, Eyes Wide Shut and 2001 dragged for me.
I actually watched 2001 for the first time yesterday oddly enough and hated it. Great cinematography of course, but man it was torture trying to sit through it start to finish. Each to their own of course, I'm not saying it's crap, just that it didn't click with me.

I have to be in the right mood to watch his films, but there's no doubt that the man was brilliant.

Funny enough, I loved "The Killing" the most out of his movies. He could do film noir like nobody's business. One of the great "heist" films.

I think he was a pretentious hack. I don't know if I agree with calling him a "hack." But he could damn sure be pretentious as hell.

Clockwork Orange,Full Metal Jacket, and The Shining are all genius, even misses like Eyes Wide Shut were made watchable by how he filmed them. There are some great shots in that movie.

He is a better screen writer then director but his movies are f***ing great. Of all the movies I have seen, I thought they were all really great. Well Full Metal Jacket was alright really a bit overrated and I haven't seen The Shining since I was 7 because I'm still afraid to watch it. So I haven't seen any of his really old stuff or his lesser known titles but what I've seen from him so far, I'll say he is a great director.

A genius in my opinion. Clockwork Orange is my favorite simply due to Malcolm McDowell's performance. Same thing can be said for Dr. Strangelove because of Peter Summers performance. About 90% of the things he said in that movie was just improv.

Full Metal Jacket and Clockwork Orange were so epic that those two alone would be enough to call him great.
The Shining/2001/Dr. Strangelove are just icing on that awesome cake. Hell, I loved Barry Lyndon. Still haven't seen Spartacus or Eyes Wide Shut.

I think that the reason the people think of Full Metal Jacket as being half good and half bad is because there is such a jarring severance between the halves. Seriously, if the movie had started in the middle and had the first half as a flashback as Joker thinks to himself how he got to be the kind of person who could stand over the sniper and even debate as to whether he wants to shoot her or not, do you think that you would have the same impression? The simple fact is that the murder/suicide at the end of the first half is easily the high point of the film means the that rest if anticlimactic. THAT is why I think many find the second half bad. On its own, I think it is still pretty good.

About 90% of the things he said in that movie was just improv. I think you mean Peter Sellers. Anyway, I think he's a very good director. I love The Shining, Dr. Strangelove and A Clockwork Orange. But with that said, as good as some of the stuff in it is, I can't sit through 2001 without wanting to take a nap halfway through. That movie is just so boring.

He made my favorite movie of all time: A Clockwork Orange. I also really love The Shining, and I was pretty creeped out the first time I watched Eyes Wide Shut.

I think he was a pretentious hack. I've never understood why "pretentious" functions as a criticism against something/someone.

Truly one of the best. I don't think ever made a bad film. Some are uneven, Eyes Wide Shut for example, but none are truly bad. Most of them were great. He deserves to be remembered as one of the best american directors of his generation

A genius in my opinion. Clockwork Orange is my favorite simply due to Malcolm McDowell's performance. He made that movie and Kubrick is a great director from limited few I've seen...but I never liked any of the endings he's done. It just ends rather than a successful conclusion to a powerful story.
