I dislike both of them, but I can tolerate Family Guy. That's more than I can say about the Simpsons.

If by absolute best you mean 15 years ago, then it's the Simpsons no contest. Comparing the two shows today I'd probably give it to Family Guy, which isn't necessarily a compliment since the Simpsons has sucked for a long, long time.
And please nobody give me that stupid "still better than 90% of everything else on TV" shit. That doesn't make the Simpsons good, it just means everything else sucks more.

Seasons 5 through 8 of the Simpsons are unparalled in creativity and humor.
I have really grown tired of Family Guy now. I might just keep the first 2 DVD sets and sell the others.

Now, Family Guy before it got cancelled is better than Simpsons of now.
But at their absolute peaks, NOTHING and I mean NOTHING tops The Simpsons.

I'm only 4 weeks older than The Simpsons. I've literally grown up with the show and I can't even begin to imagine how many times I've seen certain episodes. As I type this, the episode of the Simpsons where Mr. Burns is trying to find his teddy bear is on the TV. I've seen this episode countless times in my life, but I'm still laughing out loud at the jokes. That's how good the Simpsons was.
I was a really big fan of Family Guy, but I found that my enjoyment of it went WAY down once I bought the DVD's. The episodes really don't hold up to repeat viewings. If there's new episodes on I'll watch them, and I'll find them hilarious. But a couple of months later I might see the same episode and I'll think 'Meh'. It's gotten to the point when I get a season of it on DVD as a present, I'm actually disappointed cos I know I won't really enjoy them.
The Simpsons is a shadow of what it used to be, and yeah I'd say right now FG is better than it. But with both at their absolute peak, there is absolutely no contest.
The Simpsons blows FG out of the water.

Very few shows have acheived the quality that The Simpsons did at it's peak. It absolutely eclipses Family Guy.
I don't mean that as a slight to Family Guy either, it's just not in the Simpson's league.

The Simpsons hands down. I like both shows, but I can still watch the older episodes and laugh even though I've seen them countless times. But with Family Guy the shows that I thought were hilarious aren't as funny as they used to be.

I've never been a fan of The Simpsons.
The character voices are annoying, the jokes are never that funny, the storylines are usually stupid/suck.
So I vote that Family Guy at it's best is leaps and bounds better than The Simpons.

Given that the Simpsons at it's best was five seasons of the best that comedy had to offer during a decade when Comedy had a lot to offer, whereas Family Guy had two good seasons, and a couple of okay seasons during a period when the height of comedy was Jon Stewart making funny faces during presidential speeches.
