ST:TNG was an ok show until Riker grew a beard, then it became pretty awesome.
I don't quite understand the power of the Riker Beard, but let's use this thread to appreciate it!

I never thought of Riker's beard before, but I must admit that it is majorly epic and manly.

It was indeed an impressive beard, but it wasn't enough to turn the show around on its own. Most of season 2 was still shit.

Remember when Geordie had a beard, good times.
Maybe if Janeway wasn't such a hardass about facial hair Voyager would have been better.

Commander Riker's beard was great, but it was not as good as Lieutenant Riker's (the transporter clone's) goatee.
DS9 had a similar elevation due to change in hairstyle. Once Sisko shaved his head and grew a goatee, he looked and acted the badass that he always was supposed to be (kind of like Hawk, that previous character that Avery Brooks was famous for playing).

When I was younger,I started watching TNG after Riker already had the beard.Years later, when I got back into it and was watching it from the beginning,it was so weird and I had trouble enjoying the show when he was beardless.Once it had appeared,it was like,"Yeah, everything's right again!"

John Frakes (Riker) looked surprisingly similar to my dad without the beard.

Riker is the reason I still rock a beard to his day, it was amazing. As Dr. T said when Sisko shaved his head he became a badass, thats what got me hooked to DS9.

When I had a beard, I modeled it after Riker's. Pretty basic beard, really.

I think the awful writing probably hindered your enjoyment more than Riker's lack of a beard. Honestly I don't think there's a single good episode in that first season.

Was it the first season where the evil mind-controlling centipedes took over Starfleet? That one was ok.

Weird how changes in hair often marked improvements in the ST franchises... Riker's beard Sisko's bald / goatee combo Janeway losing the bun hairstyle T'Pol growing her hair out... Coincidence? Was it the first season where the evil mind-controlling centipedes took over Starfleet? That one was ok. Affirmative. "Conspiracy", I believe the episode is called.

As I recall, that episode was WAY out in left field. Very, very strange. Riker's beard did indeed rock. Why he shaved it in the movies, I'll never understand. Besides, it worked it's magic on Troi, and she was an empath, so it must've had some serious mojo going on.

Watching it as a fairly young kid, it freaked me out, especially when eating maggots... *shudder* I think I read once that it was going to be an ongoing story but got dropped... As for Insurrection, Riker losing his beard pales to something else...

Yeah, that moment was strange too.
Was anyone around about 3 and a half years ago when somehow, some way, a conversation about fast food wound up figuring out all the Star Trek races somehow representing fast food?
Still one of the stranger conversations I've had on this site, but I thoroughly enjoyed it, because it was so off guard and random.
