Why don't they release a CD of this kid's stuff rather than the insipid "Kids Bop" Beatles albums they churn out? This is actually charming in an odd way.

The obvious question is who is the current great ukelele player? Dunno about current, but I guess it'd be someone between now and Tiny Tim.

This kid is a natural performer. I can understand the "pushy parents" comment, but it's possible that they just had a kid that was interested in music and got him the ukulele and some books or lessons. A ukulele is a pretty sensible choice for a little kid's first instrument, because it's small and can be handled easily, and while it certainly requires study and practice it's not an especially difficult instrument to play. And if the kid also likes to sing it makes more sense than a recorder. Weird pro-ukulele rant aside (sorry) the videos are cute. The obvious question is who is the current great ukelele player? Dunno about current, but I guess it'd be someone between now and Tiny Tim. There's actually a whole subculture of ukulele enthusiasts. I consider it one of the more bizarre and colorful niches in American music in terms of the performers and fans, and that's saying a lot. If you're interested, I'd start with Janet Klein, Brian Hefferan, Lil Rev, Ralph Shaw, and Doctor Sparkles. Not neccessarily in that order.

Surprisingly, I knew about the ukulele subculture, since a friend of mine plays one.

Oh that's cool. If he's any good he should come up with a concept and record an album. The fans seem to appreciate any quality effort from a ukulele player. I learned about it from working at a music store that sells a lot of ukes.

For those asking about the great current ukelele player...Jake Shimabukuro, look him up. His music's actually pretty good.
