Were all of the "guests" on the show legit or were they actors? I know not all of the guests on the show were legit, because I've seen the Iron Sheik and Gary Wolf, as well as Mickie Knuckles on the show before, but some of those guests were very convincing.
I've asked this question to people before and never really got a solid answer.

As with a lot of shock talk shows, some are real but others are not. Sometimes they hire actors, other times it is actually people who work for the show. But I believe there are people who really act that way and have those problems and do go on the show.
I also recall years ago at the height of Springer, Dateline having several former guest come on and asked them if they were told to start a fight and I think all of them raised their hands. I guess that could imply that they weren't hired but were coaxed into acting a certain way.
And there are people who go on, pretending to have a conflict and are doing it just to get on TV. There was a Springer rules the World VH1 special and in a spring break Springer, three friends went on a "girlfriends cheating with best friend" episode, convinced Springer and staff, only a few days later in a newspaper reveal they faked the whole thing.

I'm pretty sure that back when it first started, before there was fighting every episode, it was a legit talk show. (at least as legit as a talk show like that can be) I remember him having a recurring guest that was a homeless teenager that eventually passed away, and things of that nature.
Once it became a big brawl though, I'm sure it was mostly actors, and as stated earlier, people coerced into starting fights.

Back in the beginning in like 1991 when it first came on it was more of a straight clean cut political and social talk show. It wasn't until around 1996 and 1997 when they started bringing on very notorious guests like the KKK on. The late 90s was probably when it was at it's best because it was still real for the most part. Now it is just redneck and ghetto fake crap.

I knew a girl who went on and they just gave her a part to play. She didn't even know the people she was supposed to be related to.

Back when it first got started, it was broadcast out of Cincinnati's WLWT studios as a legit program, and even during the first couple of seasons in Chicago, they still kept it to a social show, sort of like a younger Donahue. Then it evolved into the shlockfest we know today when they saw that fights, Klansmen and lesbians equal ratings.
