Sometimes we put so much importance on the newest of the new during the year, we can forget to mention bands or albums that may not be brand new that we either just discovered this year or became a bigger fan through repeated listens.
Myself:
Kamelot: Nothing new this year, aside from a re-issue of their "Ghost Opera" album. However, this year I got more into their music than I ever have. It's one of those things where I'd pick out certain songs on each album and listen to them, then after a while go back to the other songs and over time they even began to eclipse the songs I previously thought were "the best." Also, this was the year I finally got ahold of their "One Cold Winter's Night" DVD. I haven't been able to see them live, so this definitely helps and made me an even bigger fan than I was before.
Amorphis: I got into these guys around the time "Tuonela" was released and really loved their sound. However, Pasi's voice started to really grate on me after a while and whenever a band chances lead singers you wonder how it'll affect their overall sound. However, after a few random shuffle mixes where "Silent Waters" actually made it, I got more and more into the song and soon checked out the whole album. Once "Skyforger" was released I instantly grabbed onto that, and even went back to "Eclipse" as well.... definitely became a much bigger than than I was before.
Eluveitie: I had heard the name before, but was always turned off by the Folk/Metal label. However, after listened to a podcast that actually included "Grey Sublime Archon," I decided to give them a shot. I was completely blown away by most of their songs and really got into them as well.

Amorphis' has released some classics... tales from a thousand lakes stands out. But if lost track of them over the past 10 years.
Im not a big fan of folk metal per say. But Falkenbach has to be the best band ive heard of that genre, Moonsorrow a close second.
As for re-discoveries the few bands that have resurfaced on my playlists are.....
Limbonic Art's "In Abhorrence Dementia" Summoning's "Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame" Emperor's "Into The Nightside Eclipse" Immortal's "Battles In The North" Falkenbach's "Heralding The Fireblade" Katatonia's "Brave Murder Day"

Oasis. My GF and I have claimed "Wonderwall" as our song so I got the "What's Story Morning Glory" album and it's great.

Crystal Castles. I'm totally addicted to this song in particular:
They're still pretty recent. I've also been listening to Love Spirals Downwards lately. I haven't for years.

Emo in general (real emo, not the poorly-defined catch-all that people seem to throw at every band nowadays). A big example would be Algernon Cadwallader, who are just absolutely stunning and awesome.
And some older stuff in Cap'n Jazz:
And some Mineral, why not?:
Emo is a fantastic genre and I really hate it being so horribly misrepresented by people who have no idea what they're talking about nowadays.

Chevelle, which is good because their last effort was crappy, but this one seems not so bad, and hell even if it is, I can go back to listen to Point #1:
Also Circa Survive, shout out to DUDE with this one:
And a localish band, that gets attention on the national stage, their singer China Phillips is amazing.

Diamond Head - Lighting To The Nations: This album is amazing. It's one of those rare albums you absolutely love from start to finish on the very first listen. And that's saying a lot since it's 14 tracks, which I find to be a lot considering the time period it came out in. This albums just kicks the f***ing door down and rocks your face off till the very end. It seriously reaches a Led Zeppelin level of awesome, and I dare say surpasses it.

Every year there's a band that I discover or never felt the need to listen to before.
2001: Rage, Pantera, SOAD etc etc 2002: Slipknot, Radiohead 2003: Metallica, Oasis 2004: The Smiths, Pixies 2005: Nine Inch Nails 2006: The Cure 2007: The Jam 2008: Jimi Hendrix, Atreyu 2009: Alice In Chains
Those are the main one's
AIC's new album blew me away this year and although I've never stopped listening to them, The Prodigy's new album was great, better than I ever thought it would be.

Crystal Castles. I'm totally addicted to this song in particular: They're still pretty recent. I've also been listening to Love Spirals Downwards lately. I haven't for years. I discovered Crystal Castles this year too (thanks mostly to Saints Row 2). However, I gotta say "Magic Spells" (along with "Good Time") kinda gets on my nerves. I prefer the crazy songs like "Xxzxczx Me" myself. Anyways, there seems to be something that I discover like a year too late and end up loving. Last year, it was Blaqk Audio, a dance side-project from a couple of guys in AFI. This year, it was William Control, a new wave side project from the lead singer in Aiden. I don't know what it is about pop-punk bands spinning off to do techno albums but I'm digging them. Oh yeah, I re-discovered The Prodigy too. I knew they were around but literally haven't listened to any of their stuff since Fat of the Land. Listening to it takes me back to middle/high school when they were huge.
