I got to thinking...some guys spend YEARS trying to get over ONE character and fail to do so. Mick Foley basically got FOUR characters over (mankind, dude love, cactus, and foley himself). Of course some of this was aided by him knowingly switching and having some form of "personality disorder", yet he made each character fresh, new, and enjoyable. As far as in-ring goes, in the mid-late 90s he was very solid, and when he was in athletic shape, coupled with his great match psychology skills, he was apt to put on a good match with nearly anyone.
Where do you think his place in wrestling and WWE history lye exactly?

He absolutely is a solid legend and has his rightful place in WWE history.
............lets not really go as far as to say Dude Love was over as a serious character.

Legend.
And probably the most original mind in the business.
And I still rate him at the best all round promo guy, soley because he can do it all: angry, mad, psycho, evil, funny - proper funny, smark.

He's not underrated in the annuals of wrestling history, but he doesn't get enough credit as an all-around talented wrestler due to the infamous bumps he took.

I know WHY he took the bumps he did: it was something no one else was willing or able to do, and it helped him stand out. That being said, he is capable of a lot more than just playing crash test dummy. It's like with Terry Funk: Known for the hardcore, able to do the... uhhh... softcore? wrestling very well, as well.

He is a legend, and my favorite wrestler of all time.
Which is really saying something considering he never looked like a wrestler, lacked any real flashy moves, and never did 450 Splashes off the top rope or five minute chain wrestling marathons.
He has an ability to get into character and convince you that everything is genuine that most wrestlers lack. Never did I mark out more than when he won the WWF Title on RAW.

While he is fairly underrated by many (I don't remember ever being bored by the guy, and he talks publicly about a lot of things and is entertaining everywhere he goes) he certainly is overrated by a lot as well. For as much as I've seen Triple H, Guerrero, Cena and even Flair get crapped on, Foley's always been immune to it. If I never had to see those other four get criticism I wouldn't complain, um... it's just relative I suppose.

People have called him anywhere from dead weight to a whore, for instance.

Wow. Up until I finished my post I had forgotten that he was still wrestling actually. Calling him a whore is a bit much. He's an entertainer who doesn't earn millions from blockbuster films, he's supposed to plug his books and all that fun stuff. It's part of their job.
Okay, back on the Mick bandwagon.

And for the flack he gets about writing all his books, they keep selling, and they are all very entertaining.

Heel Dude Love was extremely over during his feud with Stone Cold, and their match at Over the Edge is an under rated classic

People crap on Hardcore Diaries because it wasn't the same as his first two books. But it was never meant to be, it was designed as a warts-and-all look at the creative process, which is exactly what it was. If you read it in this context it was pretty enjoyable.

Very underrated. Granted he wasn't a mat wizard but put him under hardcore rules he can have an excellent match with anybody. And like said before, he is probably the most versatile promo guys the business has ever had.

I took out Hardcore Diaries from the library and enjoyed it, but it certainly wasn't my favorite. Not sure how i would have felt if i shelled out 25 bucks for it.

Depends on what you mean by overrated. I think what he meant was the exact opposite...since the thread title says "underrated."
