I'm watching SS '96 on WWE Classics on Demand right now. I had taken a break from the WWF between about '95 and '97, so a lot of this stuff is new to me. I was just wondering, what's up with JR?
Was he supposed to be a heel? He doesn't have a heel bias in his commentary, he just seems to be an egotistical, grumpy version of regular JR. Was there some kind of angle to this?

He turned heel when he introduced Fake Razor and Fake Diesel (Kane) in September 1996. He blasted Vince for firing him due to his Bells Palsy. Try and track down In Your House: Buried Alive, he'd kind of toned it down by Survivor Series. They actually cut him off at Buried Alive in a case of 'Technical Difficulties'. It all seemed to be resolved come Rumble 1997 when J.R finally donned the Black Resistol hat that Vince had been trying to make him wear for a while.
EDIT: found the turn:

Iliked '96 "Heel" Jim Ross. too bad it was attached to that stupid Fake Diesel and Razor storyline. But it was Angry Jim Ross before Angry Jim Ross.

Having J.R. go heel on Vince created problems on commentary, because J.R. and Vince couldn't call matches together without constantly drawing attention to their own feud. (Check out the Buried Alive PPV mentioned above and see how awkward the first two matches are.)
They tried to fix the situation by using J.R. as a backstage interviewer who refused to ask the wrestlers "softball" questions, but that didn't last long. So they slowly brought J.R. back to "normal," but it took several weeks, and Survivor Series fell during that strange interim period where he was grouchy and still taking occasional digs at Vince.

Seems like another of these rants might be overdue. Only this time aimed at Johnny Ace instead of McMahon.

The crowd ate it all up, which leaves me to believe that heel JR would be a face in all the world.

Didn't Heel JR punch Michael Cole and call him "pretty boy"? I seem to remember that happening.
Vintage announcer battles!

I liked the angle, but it was a case of:
1. JR being too likable and seeming off and uncomfortable heeling it up. Kinda like Bret Hart, but he adapted and managed to make it work where as JR really couldn't.
2. His reasons for being a dick were actually understandable and agreeable. It was like if they tried to make Austin a heel in the McMahon feud. Nobody is going to boo a guy sticking up for himself against a rich boss, especially if he has a good reason for it.

Did you hear the pop he got when he called the toga thing "stupid"? THAT's what makes me think a Ross explosion on today's product would go over HUGE. Especially if he were to, say....bring in a wrestler that's his idea of what the company should be built around, and what the company should embody. Could be a huge launchpad for a future talent.

Even as a kid I remember marking out during this. It definitely didn't help that WCW was red hot at the time and WWF was pretty sucky. Only thing I really enjoyed then was the Taker vs. Mankind feud. I remember agreeing with him a bunch and then being confused that he was a heel. I guess it was the whole promising Razor and Diesel thing and then crapping on the fans hopes by bring out fakes, but that didn't work for me since I was a 12 year old mark with no internet and even I was not stupid or naive enough to think NAsh and Hall were actually going to show up.

So, JR has a pattern of coming back from Bell's Palsy as a heel. Hmmmm.

Jim Ross shooting on Vince for his "stupid idea" of a Japanese Noh mask gimmick for Doctor Death was great. He schooled us all in Dr. Death's credentials as an amateur/collegiate wrestler and opened my eyes to Vince McMahons's absurd view of what he thinks the fans want to see.

JR would be a great manager, he'd give his wrestler instant cred.

I guess like he did for Dr. Death, only this time we wouldn't have a Brawl For All ruining things. I could see him getting behind Swagger. He's an athlete, I am pretty sure he's from Oklahoma. Hell, he even does the Oklahoma Stampede sometimes, and a variation of the Doctor Bomb.

Jeez, I forgot all about the heel JR along w/ fake Diesel and Razor gimmick. That angle failed right from the start. At the Survivor Series PPV I recall JR making comments trying to breathe life into the the storyline by stating that the new Razor and Diesel are younger stroner and much more better looking than the originals. Both Hall and Nash were red hot and co-creaters of the nWo and they're going to tell me Isaac Yankem is better than them??? Thats what killed it for me. It also killed JR's credibility. But if the angle was a success I remember hearing that Vampire Warrior (Gangrel) was going to be brought in as fake Mr. Perfect that is before Hennig left for wCw. Also Raven and Stevie were also going to be introduced as fake Bret Hart and fake HBK but they too went to wCw.
