Which of these matches given away on free TV this past Raw could've eventually drawn the most money as a first-time-ever PPV match in the future? Assume there would've been time for a proper feud buildup.

Cena/Punk. Great match. I'm not complaining about seeing it for free though

Cena/Punk. It's the reason for the 16.9, for the first time in a long while i wanted to see a raw match, however like the cake in portal it was a lie, and before certain people chime in with "oh you knew cena was going to win, he the champ yada yada yada..." Remember when when raw was spontaneous and the idea of puk going over cena wasn't a laughable concept?
That being said I'll chalk this up to fool me once raw shame on me.

Why do people complain about Raw sucking, and then bitch about giving away great matches on free tv? I don't get it either. If anything, they owe us some great free TV matches after so many let-down PPV's this year.

Good thread. Definitely Cena vs Punk.
DX vs Hart Dynasty should have been built up over time and could have been used to elevate Hart Dynasty. They should have mentioned the back story. It shouldn't have been a throwaway match with no build up. DX is totally calling it in now. I hate them so much.
If Punk vs Cena was on a PPV, it would make me want to see that PPV more. I even think Punk vs Cena could have been on a WrestleMania.

Why do people complain about Raw sucking, and then bitch about giving away great matches on free tv? I thinks it's more of a this would of best been saved for a ppv attitude then that, IE: imagine flair vs micheals was done on velocity, would'nt quite have the same impact would it?

Oh Cena vs. Punk for sure.
Though like I said after Raw, it wasn't close to the mind numbing stupidity that was giving away the very first Jericho/Taker match for free, some 5 months before Wrestlemania. When I see them doing this on an almost monthly basis anymore, I wonder if they've just resigned themselves to knowing the buyrates are going to keep bombing no matter what and they don't care.

You're comparing the flagship show of the WWE to the bottom of the barrel show that's no longer on anymore. IMO, having a good match on tv shouldn't be seen as a waste of money. It should be seen as a way of building up the PPV.

It wasn't so much that they gave away Cena/Punk on free TV. It was the fact they gave away Cena/Punk on free TV with no hype during the first hour of a three hour show that traditionally gets no ratings. It should have been treated a little more special.
But as posters have said before, not saving Jericho/Taker for a major PPV was a bigger mistake, even though it was a great match.

It should be seen as a way of building up the PPV. There's a difference between having a good, entertaining match on free TV versus a never-been-seen-before potential money match that could sell a PPV. An example of a pretty good giveaway: HHH vs Cena part 9,389 on free TV right before Cena's last match with Orton. Several people on this forum felt it was a great match that was worth tuning in for. (I didn't, but that's another story.) An example of a stupid money match opportunity blown: Cena vs. Punk. Cena is clearly the face of the company. Punk is a young up-and-coming star who's already made a name for himself but has the potential to be a serious player in the coming years. The two men facing each other for the first time, if booked and built up properly as a momentous event, could have meant real PPV buys.

But as posters have said before, not saving Jericho/Taker for a major PPV was a bigger mistake, even though it was a great match. That might have been part of the idea. Having people tune in right at 8 and seeing the conclusion of a John Cena-CM Punk match might have accomplished two things. 1. Next time there is a 3 hour Raw people more people might be more inclined to remember to catch the first hour knowing they might miss something special. 2. People that only caught the tail end of it might be inclined to PAY for the match if it's a pay per view knowing what they did see was an awesome finish and now they want to see the full match. I actually saw the full thing, and I'd be even more inclined to buy a pay per view with a Punk-Cena main event based on what I saw on Raw. It was only 11 minutes and it was non-title. More of a teaser of what they can do more than anything.

Exactly.....
Old reference but I remember they sold Flair vs Savage at WM8 as the first time the two had ever wrestled and it did seem special. It wouldn't have been such a big main event if that match had already taken place on Saturday Night's Main Event or Prime Time Wrestling.

Cena and Punk are on different shows, so I could see it being done as a way to get more people to watch the 3 hour Raw and out over how special it was having interbrand matches on free TV. It's not like thw two will cross paths all that often in the forseeable future.
