How does mike Rupp have 8 goals this season? Because the penguins are so thin at wing How thin are they? Their so thin they have to play Mike Rupp 13 minutes a game.

And you are wrong Marty's better. If Marty had to play under the same system that Patrick Roy played under for so many years and not been protected by that defensive trap.. Marty's stats would be average at best. The only reason he's been able to put up the numbers he has over the past decade is because he's protected by that trap, whichever variation they're playing.

Marty's stats would be average at best. The only reason he's been able to put up the numbers he has over the past decade is because he's protected by that trap, whichever variation they're playing. Dr. Cox? Thank you, doctor. Marty would thrive in any system, and the fantasy world where the Devils trap their way to victory every year dissipated following around 1997-1998 or so. The last few years the Devils have thrived more as a powerful forechecking team, anyway. Don't look at the teams that included the A-Line (Elias/Arnott/Sykora) and tell me that the Devils are nothing but a trap team. Besides, the trap has been co-opted, and used more stringently by, the vast bulk of the NHL since the late 90's. Watch a Penguins game again when they're ahead by a goal, and watch them go into 1-2-2 formation. The Rangers made a living out of it all last season, but because they play in New York, it was just labeled "Good ol' fashioned Broadway defense!", instead of the hockey-killing poison it was labeled as during the few years the Devils were using it. Martin Brodeur will go down as the greatest goalie of all time due to simply BEING the greatest goalie of all time. Roy revolutionized things with the butterfly (for the worse, in my opinion), but Marty's flexibility, his vast array of weapons (puck handling, passing, etc.), and his sheer ability for highlight reel saves puts him a tiny cut above. As for this year, everyone said Lemaire would stop Zach Parise from being a points-nabbing superstar, yet Zach's on an even better offensive pace than he was last season, and the Devils' power play is more dynamic than it's been in ages, it seems, following a slow start. Basically, the Devils are a productive-yet-unspectacular offensive team, but other team's fans want to complain "Those meanie-head Devils won't let us score!". Well, um, tough? That's kind of the point of hockey: don't let the other team score. And that great defense hasn't been the result of using the neutral zone trap in years, its lately been more forecheck and smart stick placement on the ice in the defensive zone.

Screw the Devils.
Screw The Pens, too. I CAST THE GHOST OF DAVID VOLEK upon you, PENGUINS!
My Hockey team is back. And not terrible.
Hope! We has it.

Sure it's defense minded but it's good sound fundamental hockey

You'd think taking a home-and-home from the Rags could keep Pens fans and Devils fans from sniping at each other.
Though I guess I shouldn't get into this, since I'm the only one involved who isn't a mod...

We're bound to snipe at one another. But the fact remains, it's ridiculous that Devils' fans have to, in essence, justify and defend winning three cups and four Prince of Wales trophies in the span of 8 years (95-03), as if they cheated to do it, when all they did was physically outplay and outlast the opposition, as opposed to this script that they somehow killed the NHL or something. By the by, when it comes to the "big kids table" in the Atlantic, I think the Isles may be there by next season. Yeah, Devs beat them 6-1, but the game was closer than that for the first two and a half periods, and the Isles are young, and obviously going to improve.

Nobody ever said their defensive trap system was cheating, just quite possibly makes for the most boring hockey games on the planet to try and watch and doesn't allow a majority of players beyond the first line to thrive offensively. Just saying why Rupp is having a career year and we're not even to December.

Don't forget about the fantastic draft record and having one of the smartest General Managers in the league for the past 20 years in Lou Lamoriello.

And while I'm discussing 03-04 season They were so lame they had to use Mario TWICE!! The leading scorer was Dick Tarnstrom, with a whopping 52 points, and a Minus 37!! You want to talk about Boring Hockey!!!!

I have a joke for you The pittsburgh penguins were so insolvent, that Mario Lemieux had to come in and buy the horribly mismanaged shell of a team just to keep the ragtag bunch of losers in a decrepit rat hole.

Guys guys guys! Can't we all just hate the Flyers? Seriously though, I honestly used to think that the reason why Marty was so good was because of the trap system and guys with names like Stevens, Daneyko, etc. but he's still putting up the numbers. I honestly believe he would've reached Roy's numbers with or without the trap. Besides, when Roy was in his prime it's not like he didn't have a whole TON of help. Hell in 01, with a defense with Bourque, Blake and Foote, I could've gotten a few shut outs. That being said, Roy is still better.

Once again, they've gone through stretches, as well, where they've been one of the more dynamic offenses in the NHL. So the whole argument just doesn't hold water. That being said, I certainly think we can all agree to hate the Flyers. That just comes naturally.

However, I hate it when people poo poo on the New Jersey Devils consistent winning.
