So, being in Chicago, I'm not much of a hockey fan because. See, judging by the local TV market, we just got an expansion team a year-and-a-half ago. They are called the "Black Hocks" or something like that. And apparently they have a lot of young talent.
I'm thinking of starting to give hockey a chance. Especially now that the Blackhawks have given long term deals to lock up Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith. Toews and Kane each get 5 years and $31.5 million; Keith gets 13 years and $72 million.
My first question: is it common for teams to sign players to super-long contracts that allow short-term cap flexibility and long-term stability, or is this a new post-lockout thing?

It's definitely a post lock-out thing. I haven't heard much lately, but there's investigations going into the deals Luongo, Pronger and someone else signed. Basically, the deals they signed were so long, the player will likely have retired by then and because the deal is front-end heavy them retiring ten years into the contract isn't a huge hit on the cap ten years later. Wayne Gretzky famously signed a 20 year, 20 million contract in 1979 with the Oilers, it was later ripped up when Peter Pocklington admitted it wasn't fair to Gretzky. Long term deals happened in the past, but these crazy-ass contracts are post lock-out. Look for them to disappear or at least it being on the table when the CBA expires.

The Bruins' powerplay is so f***ing bad that I wish they'd stop calling penalties on the other team.

Oh my god, their powerplay is SO F***ING BAD. How many unscreened slap shots from far out could you possibly take in 2 f***ing minutes?!

Wow, apparently the Canadiens' 100 year celebration included a time-machine to transport the 05-06 Bruins' for this game.
EDIT: Embarrassing. Mike Cammalleri now has just about as many goals as any two Bruins' combined.

And I love the avatar by the way. I hope you enjoy every sandwich.

Now I'm just fearful that in order for the Habs to be as good or better as they were today they need to have some two hour long celebratory ceremony before every match. Home AND Away. And they probably have to bring all their past legends along too, I hope they have enough space on the tour bus for them.

You got the Kessel facing his old team, the 08 and 09 first overall picks playing each other in the Islanders Lightning game that has an effect on the bottom of the playoff race, the Hawks vs Pens the champs vs. the young and hungry squad with nothing left to lose but the Cup considering Hossa is on their team (also the Pens Hossa thing from last year, the teams of the decade facing each other for the last time in the decade in the Wings vs the NEW JERSEY DEVILS, the Sharks Flames should be good, the coachless Flyers vs the Ovieless Caps, and the Rags spiral down their toilet of crap and I always enjoy that.

I'm a day late, but did anyone catch the end of Blues/Sharks Thursday Night?
Ridiculous finish. The Blues scored a shorthanded goal with 7 seconds remaining to tie the game at 2, and then won in a shootout.
How rare must that be? A shortie in the final minute to tie the game? Nevermind the final 10 seconds.
Fast Forward to 4:30

As soon as they couldn't score on a 5 on 3 (after BOTH Canadiens' players took the penality at the SAME time), I just knew they would lose the game.

And thanks to whomever said it was Hossa, indeed that was the 3rd contract.

Hossa 1, Crosby-less Pens 0 in the 2nd period of what has to be one of the most boring, tempo free games. Seems like it's just dragging on and on.
