Can someone explain this to me:
Someone just bid THREE TIMES IN ONE SECOND to *$@ me on an item...and to drive the price up an insane amount on another, but at least I still won that one...same asshole too....seriously how is this even technologically/humanly possible?

They set their bid before. Example:
They put their bid so that the most they pay is $20. You put 15, goes to 16, you put 17, goes to 18, you put 19, goes to 20.

I dunno, that doesn't seem to add up...
Here's what happened....I got screwed at the LAST second on two auctions, I go to my third...
I'd bid 20 and was the only bidder
I bump it up to 30 just to make sure
Then at "17:55:56", they bid 20.50. Then, at the same time, they bid twice more to bring it to 31. I just barely get in at the EXACT time the auction ends (17:56:03) with 32 to win. Just seems fishy, ya know?

They set their bid before. Example: They put their bid so that the most they pay is $20. You put 15, goes to 16, you put 17, goes to 18, you put 19, goes to 20. Yeah, it automatically keeps bidding for you up to your max bid. Boy does it piss me off when I'm trying to win an item.

It can be annoying. But it's also handy if there is something you want but you don't want to pay more then a certain amount for it. Just put in your maximum bid once and then leave it. Also handy if the thing's auction time ends when you can not be near the internet. (work, meals, on the s****er). And when something like that comes up for me I never put in amount ending in a 0 or a 5. I usually put in a amount like $24.16. Hey if I want something I am going to make it just that little bit more difficult for rival buyers now ...... So take that tip to the bank.

Screw bidding on Ebay, I only use the "Buy now" option.

Screw bidding on Ebay, I only use the "Buy now" option. I prefer it too, but it wasn't offered here.

That's called smart bidding.
Like second poster (if i'm not wrong) said, if the current bid is $20, and then if you bid $30, it will show $20.
SO, everytime someone else bids, you somehow overbids them until it reaches $30.

They are using an EBay Sniper (if those things still exist). Basically, it's an Internet tool/service/robot that bids at the last second. Unfair? Yes, but not illegal that I know. Just google for it and use it yourself.

No they aren't
As others have stated, on ebay you enter a maximum bid and if someone beats you're starting bid then ebay automatically increases your bid until other bidders give up or put in a higher maximum bid
Not unfair at all since ebay put it in themselves and as others have stated quite handy

I've purposely jacked up the prices on items where I knew others were using the auto-bid feature. Risky yes, but quite satisfying.
