TOS did have Tribbles.
Of course, so did that one episode of DS9.

The third season of TOS has The Enterprise Incident, which is one of the best episodes in the entire saga, if you ask me. But yeah, it was a lot weaker than seasons 1 or 2 overall. It also had the incredibly disappointing Turnabout Intruder as a season (and series) ender. Exactly. The problem when anyone tries to defend Series 3 is that it began with "Spock's Brain." Which is like trying to keep the Titanic afloat after it hit the iceburg. Well it's known among Trekkies as "The Turd Season" for good reason. In addition to Spock's Brain it also contained stinkers like And the Children Shall Lead and The Way To Eden. The latter not just being a bad episode in it's own right but it may well have inspired the plot of The Final Frontier.

But The Way to Eden had hippies. HIPPIES! And comically bad ones, at that.
