This one may just qualify as wrestlecrap I believe, although all of the then newly relaunched ECW has already been documented in a couple of inductions. But this one kind of sticks out for a few reasons, not the least of which being because it was just so freaking pointless.
The setup was basic: Kelly Kelly has a crush on Punk. Mike Knox gets jealous. The inevitable culmination would have been a low lvl PPV match between Punk and Knox to settle the score. But yet...that did not happen. Instead, Kelly Kelly repeatedly professed her affections for Punk...and he acted like he didn't give a flying hoo ha. Seriously, I can recall in those few promos involving the two that he looked like he couldn't have cared less to have this hot chick saying she was interested in him.
And yet despite Punk's utter lack of interest in his girlfriend, apparently Knox felt like he had a reason to be jealous. So much so, that that pretty much became his moniker for several weeks. They may as well have announced him coming to the ring as "Mike Knox, the very jealous boyfriend of Kelly Kelly." To his credit, Knox played the part well. He tried his best to be the annoying heel. When Kelly would do her lame striptease routines-whether she could manage to get her bra unhooked or not-Knox would run out and cover her up. Anytime other wrestlers were caught looking at her, he would trash them. But yet...he never went after the object of her affections. I would think the natural way to culminate this potential feud would be to have Knox interfere in Punk's matches, costing him wins and handing him beatdowns. And yet as much as Kelly fawned over Punk...Knox seemed even more intent on focusing his attention elsewhere.
The annoying part to me especially was that this seemed like a wasted opportunity to elevate Punk. It was clear from the get go that WWE had some grand plans for him, and this would have been a terrific little starter feud. Instead, WWE had Punk get into the main event of his first WWE PPV...and get squashed. And Knox promptly "dumped" Kelly and killed the whole thing. Like I said, a pointless angle that went nowhere. The kind of stuff wrestlecrap is made of.
