The Chicago Cubs have announced that they have come to an agreement with Greg Maddux to join their front office with the title of Assistant General Manager. He will assist the organization in player development in both the major and minor leagues and contribute to talent evaluation during spring training and the regular season.
My take: golf and gambling money, a few hours a day for six weeks in Mesa gives him plenty of golf time (especially if Smoltz signs with a Cactus League team), and possibly a "here, learn the ropes, kid" position to put a lit fire under the ass of Jim Hendry. I have to say, the idea of hiring a golf-obsessive son-of-a-Vegas blackjack dealer might be a decent front office hire.

Breaking News: The AP has just now reported that Mark McGwire has told the Associated Press that he used steroids for the better part of a decade, as well as HGH (the HGH is through a source, not included in the steroid statement). He regrets his use and wishes that he had not played in what he himself referred to as the "Steroid Era."
Edit: to all the baseball fans and Cards fans who defended McGwire and said he was clean and it was just the androstenedione, I for one would like to say, Suck it.[/size]
Note, I'm not accusing the Cards fans here of being such meatballs by any means. But there are plenty of people out there who didn't want to believe without bathroom stall injection pictures.

Mike Francesa is reporting that Mark McGwire has admitted to using steroids while breaking the HR record Color me not surprised in the slightest. He won't get into the HOF but that's irreverent now.

Mike Francesa is reporting that Mark McGwire has admitted to using steroids while breaking the HR record I'm very curious as to what kind of tips he's going to give the Cardinals players as their new hitting coach... "No, Albert, the needle goes near the thigh!" "Relax, Matt, there's nothing wrong with your recent fits of rage!" "Just remember, Yadier, it's not cheating unless you get caught!"

McGwire now looks like an even bigger asshole for his testimony a few years back.
And since he has come right ut and admitted that his homerun case was aided by steroids, then he doesnt belong in the hall

Apparently the Braves made an offer to Johnny Damon.
Here is hoping he accepts.

His speed isnt what it used to be, and his arm rivals that of a 5 year old girl. Yes, he can still hit (though, let's see him hit ooutside of the bandbox that it the new Yankee stadium)

I think most people would be too, if he hadnt been such a stone cold dick about it. He had plenty of chances to man up, and he didnt. He lied to everyone then ducked questions from congress to save his rep a little longer.

McGwire's accusation will make it EASIER to get him in. Hear me out:
Listen...I know that what he did was ethically wrong. I know it was cheating, I know it's bad for the body...but I don't see how that affects him getting in the hall. Baseball has ALWAYS been a dirty game right back to when it started to begin forming as what we know in the 1840's. If ethics are what determines who gets in, let's expel Candy Cummings because the curve he "invented" was not allowed. Let's expel Leo Durocher because he was suspended for gambling. Let's expel Cobb because he was a racist. Let's expel Gaylord Perry because he used vaseline. Let's not also forget that Walter Johnson, Chrsity Matthewson and others could've used spitballs (just because they were not associated with that doesn't mean they didn't throw one.)
Such hypocrisy in the hall. Baseball and ALL SPORTS have NEVER been 100% clean games.

Better late then never I guess lol
Also he's kind of stupid because didn't his HOF vote % go up this year? Now admitting this pretty much seals it that he'll never get in. He should've kept lying.

It went up, but not enough to make a difference or to give him a reason to keep up this charade: 2007: 23.5% 2008: 23.6% 2009: 21.9% 2010: 23.7% Can't blame him for trying something new. Let's see if honesty is the best policy.

You know, I'm getting sick of Matt Diaz not getting a chance to start everyday. The guy just flatout hits.
He has a .310 carrer BA and absolutly kills lefties. Even though he is known to not hit righties if you look at his stats every time in his carrer he has gone over 100 AB's against righties in a season he has batted .255, .320+, and .350+. It's only when he gets fewer than 100 AB's against righties in a season does he struggle and that's understandable.
As for HR power how about this... only twice in his carrer has he broke 350 AB's in a season. Both times he hit 12 and 13 HR's. Now, many everyday starters get about double those AB's, so if he keeps that average up he's about a 25 HR hitter.
Why trade for Melky Cabbrera and s*** when we have someone just as good if not better here already? Why keep signing all the Hinske's and trying to get Damon when Matt can play just fine? Yeah if we tried to get someone who is hands down better, I'd be fine with that. But the fact is we already have a guy who can outplay Damon and Melky and he's cheaper!

At least we now know that Sosa and McGuire were playing on even terms then during the Home Run Race.

At least we now know that Sosa and McGuire were playing on even terms then during the Home Run Race. Actually Sosa has been pretty lucky with circumstantial evidence adding up (the money in the towel poolside; Manny Alexander's glovebox; etc.). Sure, he was a more physically obvious look because it happened midcareer. But still. Yeah.

Anyone who didn't know McGwire was taking steroids during the majority of his career was either in denial or just flat out ignored it.
I think McGwire should be in the HOF, because I can assure you guys that there is at least one guy who is already in the HOF that took roids.

I think McGwire should be in the HOF, because I can assure you guys that there is at least one guy who is already in the HOF that took roids. There are plenty of Hall-of-Famers who have done so much worse for the game of baseball than using steroids. If we're going to vilify Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa for using steroids, then we need to collectively take a look back at the horrible things that Ty Cobb committed on and off the field. I think McGwire should be in the Hall, but I don't think he's a slam dunk. All he did was hit home runs. He didn't hit for average, he wasn't a stellar fielder, he wasn't particularly quick on his feet. He just stood in there four times a night and let it rip. Bonds is a more deserving Hall of Famer because he could hit for power, average, run the bases and play defense. At the end of the day, my issue with the Hall of Fame is how pompous the BBWAA is about the Hall itself, and they cast their votes with such arrogance that it devalues the importance of being a Hall of Famer. The fact that Roberto Alomar didn't get in this year because some voters felt that "he wasn't a first-ballot Hall of Famer" is deplorable. So you're going to make a guy wait one year just to feed your own egos?
