"Let that be a lesson to you Kid...
People Lie.
They look you right in the face and Lie.
They disappoint you, they say they're going to do things and then they don't do them"
these were the words of of advice I saw a dead eyed, 40 year old Electronics Boutique employee give to a 7 year old kid who was BAWLING because they didn't have the Pokeman game that was advertised in the print ad.
And I swear in that moment, I saw the sparkle leave that kid's eye and the red rosey-ness leave his cheek.
And I swear almost every day I think about that moment. It's odd, as an adult who doesn't have children it's rare you get to witness that loss of innocence in a young child from the perspective of an adult.

That's a bit cynical to say to a 7 year old imo. They probably didn't just have the game in stock.

Seems really stupid, but Conan O'Brien telling an entire nationwide audience to "One of the things I dislike most is cynicism, be kind and work hard and amazing things can happen."
The way he said it was just so not cheesey and heartfelt, it honestly gave me a little lift that I should keep trying my best,

A lot of young people need to take him up on that.

This hits particularly close to home for myself because of the past eight months of my life.

I saw an old friend, we stopped and said hello. As we parted, she said, "Have fun Kris." It came completely out of the blue and wasn't pertaining to anything in particular, but it really stuck to me. I want to have it tattooed.

Several years ago, I went to the mall to buy a new CD I had been wanting. As I was walking home listening to it on my headphones, I went through a crosswalk and a pretty girl walking a dog was coming toward me. We smiled at one another, and I reached down and petted the dog real quick as I walked past without missing a step. We looked back at one another for a moment, and smiled once more at each other, then each continued along our way. I thought for a second about going after her, but in that instant I realized that any other moment after that with her could never be as good, and I didn't want anything to tarnish that one perfect moment in time.
I still think about it sometimes.

One time, my brother fixed up my uncle's old bike and we were riding it around my gram's. After we brought it back, my grandfather hopped on it and took off down the road and my grandmother started yelling. He turned around and came back with his hands in the air and then braked and pulled back into the yard. She was yelling that he'd hurt himself (he's diabetic and has had heart issues) and asked what he was thinking and he said he just wanted to see if it was true that you never forget how to ride a bike. He was over 60 at the time and is probably the most relaxed guy I've ever known, I mean he's over 75 now and still working part time as a bookkeeper. I've never seen him run, he very rarely ever yelled, let alone raised his voice.
It just taught me to have fun.

The Conan thing stuck out to me, but there was something else I was just reminded at by OTG's story.
I went to the official opening of the place where I work, basically a playcentre for kids with Disabilities, and I was just looking around the place. On one side of the playground, half of it is fenced off to divide it from young kids to teenagers/adults, is a big structure where there's basically a tight rope with protection from one side to the other part of the structure.
So I was walking past it at one point and saw a crowd looking up at this thing and so I decided to see what they were looking at. Up there, there were two guys who couldn't be any younger then 60 who had served in a war, not sure which but they had their medals, making an attempt to cross this thing.
As they were both crossing, one of them turned to the other and they both had this conversation.
'Doesn't this remind you of the War?'
'We never had anything like this during the War. Not even in the obstacle courses.'
What stood out for me the most was that, after the hoopla ended, I decided to give it a try myself.
I almost fell off. Twice.
What it showed me? No matter what you do in your life, never let the kid inside you die. You'll be less of a person if you do.

I to this day have a memory that couldn't have happened anytime after me being around 3. Me trying to make peanut butter and crackers, and then my aunt says "...no dont use a sharp knife to put it on. Use a butter knife."
Thats it...

When I was getting my math degree, I was talking to one of my profs about how the students I was TA'ing all seemed to hate the course and how it was a bad reflection on my performance as an aide. He told me, "Don't take it personally when people say they hate math. Otherwise you won't have any friends."
