He had the lot: the talent, the look, the arrogance (even the accent). If he had been pushed properly as a heel (with or without "The Model" gimmick) could he have been WWF World Title material (back in the late 80's/early 90's)?

I don't see why not. There was a lot of competition for that spot at the time and it just wasn't to be, but if the stars had aligned differently I'd imagine Martel could've pulled it off.

He said in his shoot interview tht when he came back to do The Model in late 1991 and then again in late 1993 he said he only went back because he needed money to build his real estate business and his heart wasn't in it anymore

He looked like a doofus IMO, and despite the gimmick I thought he was as stale as day old Chinese food rolls cutting a promo. That and I dont think he was any great shakes in the ring either, He is most notable for doing the "WAHOOO FIST PUMPING HOT TAG FACE MOVES AWOOOOOOO!"

Martel was a better wrestler than most people remember.
That being said, I just cant see him as a mega-heel. I think he was fine where he was

He was good an sneaking under the ropes in the Royal Rumble.
But yeah, I think he was just right for the mid-card -- as one of those guys who were in contention for the IC belt but never won it.

He was good as the model, but even better as the pure, athletic babyface of the mid 80s, as AWA Champion.

I think of Stan Hansen who Martel fueded with in the AWA. I can only imagine how the WWE would have given Hansen some lame gimmick although Hansen was in reality an awesome successful brawler type wrestler.

I would have bought it back then. Of course I was a kid, but then again that is who WWE was marketing towards at the time.
If an over the hill Sgt. Slaughter could main event Wrestlemania, why not Martel?

Hansen was in the (W)WWF and his gimmick was that he broke Bruno Sammartino's neck... they didnt keep him around long which was unfortunate. I like the way they utilized Martel, IC level heel for a good 3 years after being an annoying baby face for 5 before that and a couple years in the early 80s.

I disagree with the people saying his AWA work was better.
The Model > gay babyface Martel
Then again, I hate all faces and love all heels, so it's natural I'd think that.

Martel is one of my favourites in the ring. His promos weren't too good though.
Give him an arrogant heel gimmick other than the Model and Heenan as a manager and he could have been an main eventer no doubt imo. He had awesome matches with about anyone.
Very underrated, he's in my top 10.

Not sure. He could have been a bigger heel, but I cannot see him being a threat to Hulk or Warrior. Maybe to Bret Hart's title reign, but Rick's WWF glory days were over at that point.
